Las Vegas, NM - The universe just got bigger in an upcoming anthology by Dreaming Robot Press.
The 2014 Young Explorer’s Adventure Guide brings together a collection of science fiction stories featuring diverse main characters aimed at a middle-grade audience.
“Of the stories we've accepted so far, 80 percent have female main characters,” said anthology editor Corie Weaver. “We don't have girls who are prizes to be won or are waiting to be rescued. All of our heroines and heroes are on their own adventure, not a side note in someone else’s.”
The Young Explorer’s Adventure Guide Weaver also features stories from writers of color, brining an exciting perspective and important voice to the science fiction genre.
According to a 2011 study of 6,000 children's books, only 31 percent had central female characters, and even fewer featured ethnic main characters. This science fiction anthology will improve the visibility of a vibrant demographic and offer a series of role models for both young men and women.
“We’ve solicited short stories from Hugo and Nebula winners, as well as from authors newer to the field,” Weaver said. “We’re thrilled to have Hugo and Nebula winner Nancy Kress on our table of contents, and she has some great company.”
A Kickstarter campaign is underway to help finance the publication of this important anthology. So far, backers who believe in the importance of diversity have committed almost $1,000 in support of the project, and the anthology has been chosen as a Kickstarter Staff Pick. Backers have a number of options, including pre-ordering copies of the 2014 Young Explorer’s Adventure Guide, donating copies to schools or being listed in the back of the print and digital version of the book as a supporter.
“Girls need to read stories where any number of possible roles are modeled for them. Just as importantly, boys need to read stories where girls are active participants in adventures. We’re proud to be putting together an anthology of age appropriate stories that all kids can identify with, filled with great adventures from a wide range of writers and a diverse set of characters — girls, boys, robots — everyone belongs here,” Weaver said.
The project will be live on Kickstarter until September 15th, during which time backers can support the project and receive rewards. For more information, contact the creator below or visit the Kickstarter campaign here.
