Kate Connor's Fort McCoy, a new film that has just started screening around the U.S, tells the true story of a family who lived next to a Nazi POW camp in Wisconsin during W.W.II.
For actress Adria Tennor, it was Connor's "unwavering commitment to tell this story and watching her will this movie into being" that attracted her to the bioipic of the Stirn family.
Tennor, who co-stars alongside Eric Stoltz, Judd Hirsch and Connor, says the filmmaker "was so positive and gracious and really made this movie happen with the help of her husband and her family and lots of friends, as well as a whole lot of people who joined her in the process, all of whom I'm sure were taken with her commitment, as I was. I really appreciate seeing this female perspective on WWII, which doesn't omit the violence and guns and some truly horrifying truths. I really value the feminine heart in this film and the look through a women's eyes both Kate's and her Grandmother's. I'm really proud to be a part of Kate's vision."
Tennor says Fort McCoy is a unique film because it's a war movie seen through the eyes of a female.
"This female perspective is an important one. I also think it's very inspiring to see this material done so well inside the indie film model. Most films of this epic quality are made with far more resources. I'm also a bit smitten with the study of how wise children can be, and how circumstances touch them and mark them for life and those imprints can be both positive and negative at once. My own film, Cracked, which is almost finished, delves into this impression of young children and how they navigate these complicated emotional terrains, and how proficient they are at it, even though they're young. Sometimes innocence is so wise."
Tennor, known for playing Joyce Darling on AMC's Mad Men, juggles an acting career while running several of L.A's most popular restraurants. So long as a film location has electricity, Tennor says she can easily handle wearing the two hats.
"My phone is also a hub of execution. An amazing amount of decimation and execution happens from that little device! But mostly, my husband, who really supports me in my endeavors and dreams comes through and picks up a lot of the slack when I'm away. We're delegating a lot at this stage. Hiring well is the key, and finding people we trust to fulfill our vision and make sure things are done the way we hope they are. And I think this happens because they "get" our vision and are inspired by it and so want to carry it out even in our absence which is gratifying."
