New Ways of Working: adapting to reality through digital resilience

Look around you—our world, as we knew it, has changed rapidly. Gone are the days—well, at least this Spring—of joining with family and friends for graduation celebrations, music festivals, large scale events, international travel plans, and side-by-side working with colleagues. Norms are challenged, rituals are reshaped, and digital resilience is redefined when we find ourselves adapting to new ways of living and working.

January 23, 2020: That was when the crisis response hit, and our first wave of employees in Asia moved to remote working. Shortly after, like a tidal wave of rippling response, the rest of global enterprise followed, and we were in full swing Business Continuity crisis management for our 135,000 employees.

In these instances, CIOs can choose to be either reactive or, take proactive measures by preparing a solid business continuity plan. Choosing the latter may be the difference between riding the wave or being swallowed by it.

Digital resilience
According to IDC, it’s estimated that by 2025 there will be 41.6 billion connected IoT devices, including machines, sensors, and cameras. In hospitals, data centers, critical manufacturing plants, and industrial sites, continuous uptime is non-negotiable, especially during catastrophic events.

Building the foundation with four key pillars:

1. Scaling IT infrastructure for business continuity
A modernized, digital backbone and infrastructure has been the gateway to resiliency, ensuring the ability to remotely monitor and conduct critical operations throughout server rooms, data centers and manufacturing floors. EcoStruxure– our IoT-enabled architecture and platform include connected products, to managing at the edge, to apps, analytics, and services. In 2019, our portfolio grew Assets Under Management by 50%, with a 3% increase in products and over 480,000 EcoStruxure installations globally. As a digital-first organization, we extend the same ambition internally, using our own digital technologies to operate efficiently, build products, and enable digital services. Currently, we have approximately 19,000 EcoStruxure connected devices within Schneider Electric facilities to accelerate our own digital transformation.

With EcoStruxure Asset Advisors, Schneider Electric seamlessly receives data center alerts while server rooms are vacated and manages inventory while factory-based employees remain at home. Today, with EcoStruxure IT, our technicians work behind the scenes to ensure business continuity and realize at least a 50% improvement in site restoral time.

With this digital infrastructure foundation already laid, we can seamlessly deploy business continuity plans ensuring digital resilience. We focused on three main areas:

  • Keeping our customer’s priorities at the forefront with continuous customer engagement.
  • Ensuring minimal disruption to our supply chain and employees and
  • Adapting to our new normal with an augmented workforce

2. Remote Working: a new normal

A Gartner, Inc. survey of CFOs recently revealed that 74% will move at least 5% of their previously on-site workforce to permanently remote positions post-COVID 19.

As our CEO, Jean-Pascal Tricoire shared in his recent blog, as the whole workforce dispersed to their homes, the enterprise was fully operational in less than two days. Within a week, almost all our customer care center services were performed from home, to manage the 110% increase in call volumes.
At the onset of the pandemic, we had roughly 30,000 concurrent connections daily. As more and more countries instituted lockdowns and work from home mandates, that number then increased to 60,000, to 90,000, and now over 100,000 today. Our marketing organization pivoted overnight to 100% digital, increasing to 115% in virtual events YoY.

For employees to collaborate digitally the digital services and platforms like Skype for Business, Microsoft Teams, and Box made it possible. With Teams, we were easily able to scale up support for the entire workforce with minimal intervention. By the end of March, we were seeing a peak of nearly 26M minutes of virtual meetings monthly, a 73% increase since December of 2019.

3. Navigating the changing market conditions

At Schneider, we privilege people, partners, and partnerships in everything we do to ensure life is on – from the executive floor to the supply chain to the ecosystem. From simplifying and harmonizing our digital touchpoints to anticipate customers’ needs, to working with our suppliers to capitalize on their value, to digitizing our supply chain. With change being the only constant, enabling a seamless flow of data from our suppliers to our inventory management applications to instantly adjust changes in taxation or delivery date was critical in mitigating any disruption to the supply change and ultimately our customers.

In 2017, we started to deploy our EcoStruxure Smart Factory program to automate manufacturing and digitize our supply chain. With EcoStruxure Plant and Machine in place, our manufacturing operations could continue, even with some factory-based employees such as Planning, Logistics, Inventory and Manufacturing Engineers with remote working.

4. Keeping Cyber Security Top of Mind regardless of the environment

According to recent reports, their world has seen a 400% increase in corona related attacks with hackers developing websites, apps, and tracking tools that claim to provide real-time information about the virus. We know that even under normal conditions, 95% of all security incidents involve human error. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cautions “Organizations should assume that malicious parties will gain control of telework client devices and attempt to recover sensitive data from them or leverage the devices to gain access to the enterprise network.” With this in mind, education and awareness are even more critical. This can include:

  • Promoting the use of the secure VPN
  • Enforcing the use of approved digital conferencing tools
  • Reminding employees of secure file sharing protocols
  • Changes in password policies mandating stronger combinations
  • Mandatory completion of training

Digital Transformation Fast-Tracked

At Schneider Electric, we believe access to energy and digital is a basic human right. Our digital transformation started decades ago on the factory floor. For companies that may be just embarking on their journey, we can expect to see a rapid acceleration based on necessity. Technology and digitalization are the crux of what the world is reliant on today. Ensuring your enterprise is ready will help you stem the tide and set your sites on new shores will make the difference. And, as we establish new norms and capitalize on our collective digital resilience as a global community, may we all come out stronger and better together.

A vision for sustainable, resilient, pandemic-era buildings: Here’s how we do it.

These days, I’ve been thinking about what our chairman and CEO, Jean-Pascal Tricoire, often says: “When it comes to climate change, I’m neither an optimist nor a pessimist: I’m an activist.”

I think the same attitude applies to a COVID-changed world: It’s time to act. It’s time to prepare our buildings — where we spend 87 percent of our lives— for today’s pandemic and tomorrow’s climate crisis.

How do we do this? As a former engineer, I’ve always been drawn to concrete solutions as opposed to abstract ideas. In this blog post, I’ll share specific ideas for transforming our buildings. I’ll then provide one answer for the million-dollar question: how to pay for it.

Upgrading to healthier, smarter buildings

Perhaps the most immediate question is how to prepare buildings for the pandemic era. Safer buildings start with digitally connected buildings. At Schneider Electric™, we manufacture digitally connected building solutions for better air quality, physical distancing, and operational efficiency.

  • Air quality: We’re supplying our customers with building management solutions that enhance ventilation, economizer use, and environmental monitoring. With digital control over HVAC equipment, facilities can keep a more vigilant watch over filtration status, air changes per hour, and other key metrics.
  • Physical distancing: Our space management sensors deliver real-time status updates on occupancy. Instead of manually counting each person in an area, our solutions automate this labor-intensive process and deliver alerts as needed. Management tools also help with re-designing optimal room layouts for safer spacing.
  • Operational efficiency: We’re offering strategies to get more from your facilities and staff without increasing costs. One key strategy is to improve energy and resource management for changing occupancy levels. Another is harnessing remote monitoring tools that allow facilities teams to deliver “telemedicine” for buildings from anywhere.

With these three solutions, buildings can elevate an occupant’s well-being, engagement, and safety, even long after the pandemic passes.

Fighting the climate crisis through sustainability and resiliency

Beyond the short-term challenge posed by pandemic readiness, our long-term vision is to take on future challenges like the climate crisis through deeper sustainability and resiliency.

As wildfires and severe storms intensify due to climate change, there’s a growing need to build more sustainable and resilient energy infrastructure. There are dozens of ways to do that, so I want to just focus on one that combines both pursuits within a single innovative system: the microgrid.

Microgrids transform the way we use energy. Instead of centralized power plants and distributed grids, microgrids co-locate electricity generation and consumption, creating the possibility of a truly decentralized, decarbonized, and digitized energy future.

  • Sustainability: With on-site solar panels and battery storage, microgrids allow organizations to run facilities without diesel generators or coal-powered grid electricity. The prices for solar and batteries continues to decline, making it even more cost-effective to switch to zero-carbon microgrid systems.
  • Resiliency: Microgrids spring to life when the main grid goes down, delivering back-up power for an indefinite period. Hospitals, military bases, and critical facilities have been early adopters, but the technology is spreading to data centers, EV fleets, and beyond.

New financial incentives are making microgrids far more financially attractive. The energy as a service (EaaS) model eliminates capital expenses and locks in a fixed rate for zero-carbon energy. Companies like AlphaStruxure, a joint venture between Schneider Electric and the Carlyle Group, make EaaS microgrids accessible to large facilities with constrained capital or limited in-house expertise. Small- and medium-sized organizations can also benefit from EaaS through another one of our joint ventures, launching later in 2020.

New tax incentives offer substantial savings

Fortunately, it’s not just microgrids that have a special financial incentive. In fact, much of the technology I’ve discussed in this article will likely qualify for major U.S. tax incentives.

The 2020 Coronavirus Aid, Recovery, and Economic Stability (CARES) Act amended Section 168 of the tax code. This deduction, along with the existing Section 179 tax deduction, allows organizations to write off 100 percent of the costs of non-residential, non-structural improvement projects to existing facilities — otherwise known as qualified improvement properties (QIPs).

In the past, these upgrades could be written off across a 39-year-period. Now, they can be written off entirely in year one of the project — a bonus depreciation that creates substantial savings.

The table here shows you a fictional example. Let’s say a hospital spends $1,000,000 on extensive HVAC system upgrades. The tax savings in year one rise from $5,385 before the incentive, to $210,000 — a massive difference.

What upgrades qualify for the incentive?

These tax incentives will catalyze much-needed upgrades to our country’s buildings.

Buildings are a key to the climate puzzle; they account for 39 percent of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions, and in the U.S., 30 percent of commercial building energy use is wasted.

Here are the types of building solutions discussed in this blog that likely qualify for the incentives:

  • Building management software tools
  • HVAC equipment such as sensors, valves, air handling, and building automation
  • Power distribution equipment such as switchgear, inverters, automatic transfer switches, distribution panels, and charge controllers
  • Software tools that intelligently control power distribution, microgrids, and IT infrastructure

A vision for sustainable, resilient, pandemic-era buildings

I am proud to work for Schneider-Electric, a company with people working hard every day to help our customers meet their energy, sustainability, and resiliency goals. And I welcome our federal government finding ways to help the U.S. build safer, more digitized buildings that can be energized by zero-carbon microgrids. With the right incentives and solutions, the U.S. private sector can accelerate toward a better future.

To learn how you can apply these tax incentives to your own facility, visit our website where we cover key highlights of the Section 168 and Section 179 incentives.

By the way, it’s not just the federal government that can help. We at Schneider provide advisory services that help you meet your energy, sustainability, and resiliency goals.

  • The Qwik-Connect system enables electrical contractors to install the SolarEdge’s storage and backup solution based on the Energy Hub Inverter to the Square D Energy Center unit in less time, without tools, and occupying a smaller footprint
  • Square D Energy Center features a dedicated electrical panel compartment that allows for faster, cleaner and more effective installations of any home backup configuration without the need for additional load panels or devices
  • Advanced safety technologies that help minimize risk against fires, electroshocks and surge events
  • QR code labeling system further simplifies set up by minimizing the time to configure many devices once the home’s WiFi network has been created
  • Using the Square D edition of the Sense app, homeowners can manage their energy usage in real-time across all devices in their home, even those that are not “smart” or connected, from their phone
  • The MySolarEdge App enables homeowners to monitor, manage and control battery storage, back-up operations, generator usage, and perform smart energy management

“As the leading inverter company in the U.S. residential solar market, SolarEdge is dedicated to working with like-minded industry leaders who are committed to developing new solutions that make going solar more accessible,” said Peter Mathews, North America General Manager for SolarEdge. “By partnering with Schneider Electric’s Square D Energy Center, we can provide a seamless energy ecosystem for both installers and system owners, while also accelerating the solar installation experience nationwide.”

“As homes become more connected and electrified, consumers are looking to stay in control of their energy in a way that supports their sustainable lifestyle choices,” said Manish Pant, executive VP of home and distribution for Schneider Electric. “The Square D Energy Center brings peace of mind and advanced functionality to homeowners to create an end-to-end energy management, residential ecosystem that suits the new energy landscape.”

Schneider Electric is on target to meet its goal to source 80 per cent of its electricity via renewable energy sources

Schneider Electric is on target to meet its goal to source 80 per cent of its electricity via renewable energy sources – reaching 65 per cent as of September 30 as part of its self-imposed sustainability targets.

The company has been measuring its environmental and social impact via its internal Schneider Sustainability Impact (SSI) dashboard as part of its sustainability commitments for 2018-2020, which measures its progress on 21 indicators closely aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 21 indicators are grouped within five megatrends – climate, circular economy, health and equity, ethics and development. For Q3 2020, Schneider recorded a score of 8.63 on a 10-point scale – up from 7.71 during the previous quarter.

Olivier Blum, chief strategy and sustainability officer at the company said he was proud of the company’s achievement, especially considering the circumstances surrounding the global pandemic in 2020.

“We consider it is our responsibility to continue making a strong impact – from how we operate to what we deliver to our customers,” Blum said.

“As we approach the end of our 2018-2020 goals and move closer to setting new objectives in 2021, we will be more ambitious, bridging progress and sustainability for all.

“Now more than ever, it is crucial that companies, governments and communities work together to not just continue, but accelerate their efforts to decarbonise the global economy.”

Among highlights in 2020 were:

  • The company is on target to meet its goal to source 80 per cent of its electricity via renewable energy sources – reaching 65 per cent as of September 30.  This means operational CO2 emissions have been reduced by more than 250,000 tonnes over the last two years. This contributed to the company being recently declared the 2020 Clean Energy Trailblazer by the Climate Group’s first RE100 Leadership Awards, which recognises companies going above-and-beyond to accelerate the global transition to clean energy.
  • Almost 200 of the company’s sites now have zero waste to landfill as part of the vision to strive for a circular economy. This means driving reduction, reuse and recycling efforts to deliver greater efficiency, while also lessening the company’s environmental footprint. At the end Q3, Schneider had nearly reached its target of 200 Towards Zero Waste to Landfill (TZWL) sites globally, already at 193. The internally defined TZWL label requires all sites to divert away from landfills at least 99 per cent of metal waste and 97 per cent of non-metal waste. Additionally, 100 per cent of a site’s hazardous waste handling must meet rigorous environmental standards, which means keeping more than 350,000 tonnes of waste out of landfills globally since 2018.
  • The company is also bolstering social and environmental credentials with suppliers. It is part of the Ecovadis ratings platform that assesses over 50,000 companies around the globe social and environmental performance.

·    Work Areas are available to show work in-progress and keep other interested parties up to date via any ArcGIS-based application.

·      Admins can now configure which attributes from the GIS are viewable and editable.

Hosted by Kevin Brown, Senior Vice President, EcoStruxure Solutions and CMO of the Secure Power Division of Schneider Electric, Executive Insights came to life during the early days of the pandemic. With a monumental shift in the number of people suddenly working from home, Brown knew executives at Schneider Electric, our customers, and our partners were making hard decisions to successfully manage this transition and he wanted to know more.

"The pandemic accelerated digital transformation faster than any company or CIO could have on their own. My team and I saw a learning opportunity for our industry that could help a lot of people dealing with similar big issues. We partnered with our own CIO organization to join our first episode, and Executive Insights was born," Brown said. "Through this series we will continue to discuss the challenges CIOs and VPs face as we move our digital transformation journey faster than we ever thought possible."

Next Up on Executive Insights: Understanding Data Center Disaggregation

The latest episode, released today, brings in Bob Olwig, VP of Corporate Business Development at World Wide Technology (WWT) to discuss disaggregation challenges with host Kevin Brown.

"For large enterprises and global service providers who have been locked into an expensive single-vendor data center design or solution, the prospect of taking advantage of the low cost and flexibility of commodity components, a practice called disaggregation, is extremely tempting. Yet with all its advantages, companies are finding that due to staff shortages and skills gaps, re-assembling these commodity components is becoming increasingly complex, time-consuming, and difficult," Olwig explained. "Through Executive Insights, we are glad to help the industry through this challenging time sharing our knowledge to overcome challenges."

The premiere episode of Executive Insights with Kevin Brown introduces Schneider Electric CIO Elizabeth Hackenson as the first guest. Hackenson led the charge to enable more than 100,000 employees around the globe to work from home seemingly overnight.

In episode 2, Hani Nofal, VP Gulf Business Machines (GBM) of Dubai discusses how his organization helped customers ensure business continuity and the critical importance of relationships especially during a crisis.

Julia White, CVP Azure at Microsoft discusses scale and efficiency in episode 3. The rapid influx of cloud-based applications and connectivity for remote workforce created complexities to securing the last mile - and it was a wildly important focus for Microsoft to address at the onset of the global pandemic. White discusses what actions Microsoft took to ensure last-mile dependency was resilient.
