I always had a lifelong passion for cycling and after years in the corporate world, I decided in 2010 to start my own small and bespoke cycling company "Gusto Cycling", the aim of which was to focus purely on all aspects of cycling holidays in Tuscany an area I know well as my family is from Montecatini Terme a beautiful spa town between Lucca & Florence.
I first read about the l’Eroica event in Cycling Weekly in 2006, it reported on a unique vintage cycling event where riders cycle on "stradebianchi”, admire the wonderful countryside, enjoy the various refreshment stops in the many vineyards and hilltop villages to enjoy the local chianti wine and traditional Tuscan food.
I met the legendary organiser Giancarlo Brocci who’s vision it was 22 years ago to admire the values of a past cycling so much that he wanted to reconnect others to the heritage that inspired much Italian history, and the challenges of the golden era of Italian Cycling in the 40’s and 50’s where riders participate on vintage steel bikes, wearing period clothing, cycle on the famous Strade Bianchi “white roads” a well know feature of this part of Chianti and Val d’Orcia a UNESCO world heritage area of southern Tuscany.
Since 1997 the event has since grown with increasing number of people from all over the world converging on this little town of Gaiole in Chianti the event takes place on the first Sunday in October, almost 7,000 cyclists participate what is now become an epitome of clean cycling, environment preservation and of having a lifestyle that aids nature and sustainability.
L’Eroica attracts a much bigger number of female participants than most cycling events, the weekend starts on Friday 5th October with activities and a huge cycle jumble and lots of food and wine tasting.
The town is also the place to purchase your cycling kit, with the stone-paved and flower-lined streets and squares taken over by a market packed full of vintage jerseys, caps, shoes, socks, and a cornucopia of bicycle parts.
L’Eroica celebrates it’s 22nd anniversary in 2018! The event starts and finishes in Gaiole in the heart of Chianti in Tuscany.
Gusto Cycling is a key travel partner of L’eroica and are able to provide Guaranteed Registrations and offer a wide range of high quality accommodation from Castles, Wine Estates, Agriturismo to excellent quality 4 & 5 star hotels. its perfectly weekend away with your partner, or group of friends.
The L’eroica ride event takes place on Sunday 7th October 2018 in Gaiole, Chianti a small town located between Florence and Siena.
Gusto Cycling will provide onsite support at the L’eroica 2018 event so you have everything taken care of. We will have a stand at the event throughout the weekend to meet and greet the Gusto team, collect your welcome pack, registration details and offer mechanical assistance at the stand as we have our own mechanic. On Fridays I organise dinner for all participants to get to know each other; if required I can also supply vintage bikes for rent.
L’eroica is not a race but a journey through Tuscany.
