CVESD expands music programs, invests millions in performing arts

Over the past three years, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has invested $15 million in performing arts programs, including dance, music, theater and visual arts. During the 2017-2018 academic year, the district will expand its music programs throughout all schools in an effort to promote creativity and higher-order thinking skills that align with California’s new state standards.

With the addition of more full-time music teachers, students will have a greater opportunity to receive music instruction during the school day and participate in other artistic activities that promote growth. Student musicians have shown to be more motivated to learn, have a better attendance record, and score higher on standardized test. Also, practicing a musical instrument teaches students about the importance of hard work, dedication, and the value of gradual improvement.

At John J. Montgomery Elementary, where music and art instruction are prioritized as essential components of student growth, students have scored dramatically better in state testing compared to previous years. In English alone, student scores grew by 15 percent in 2017, making it the district’s highest year-over-year increase in that core subject. The rise in academic performance over the past couple of years reflects the school’s increased invest in visual and performing arts programs.

Montgomery is one of 18 CVESD schools to receive a VH1 Save the Music Foundation instrument grant and is as one of five San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory Community Opus Project sites in the district.
