Before the start of the 2016-2017 school year, a lucky group of Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) juniors and seniors had the opportunity to attend the SunPower Solar Energy Academy, hosted by Cuyamaca College.
During the week-long summer event, students worked in teams to design a residential photovoltaic system and analyze the financial and environmental benefits of solar energy. Under the guidance of solar professionals, students sharpened their technical skills, increased their knowledge of solar energy, participated in hands-on activities that built teamwork and problem-solving skills, and visited the SDG&E Energy Innovation Center.
Six GUHSD schools participated in the SunPower Solar Energy Academy. El Capitan and IDEA had student representatives from the Building and Construction Trades programs, Santana sent Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing students, Monte Vista had students from Transportation, West Hills had student representatives from Advanced Manufacturing programs, and Mount Miguel sent Business & Marketing students.
Business panelist from a variety of industries provided students with invaluable insight and feedback during student presentations, which were held at the new Energy Innovation Center. Panelists included Sea World Project Coordinator Lindsay Boyd, Sea World Senior Human Resources Representative Tisha Tumangan, American Welding Society District 21 Director Samuel Lindsey, Point Loma Credit Union Business Development Specialist Carmen Contreras, and Rich Nagel from ASI Heating and Air.
The event was made possible by SunPower Energy, Vital Link, Cuyamaca College, and GUHSD’s Career Technical Education teachers Joe Cota from El Capitan and Todd Myers from IDEA Center.
