Perhaps the most renowned of influential rock bands during the early era of rock, their legacy has a heavy impact upon many later bands. This impact includes U2 a well as Queen and other pop and punk genres. To their credit, they also did a lot to popularize rock operas.
Thanks to Roger Daltrey, Pet Townshend and John Entwistle along with Keith Moon, the band was formed in 1964 and rapidly gained popularity when in 1965 they debuted their album, My Generation. A mere four years later, they began one of the most successful time periods with their release of Tommy which would be the first rock opera labeled as a rock opera. This, alongside their attendance at Woodstock during 1971 and their release of Who's Next, helped to propel them forward. Won't Get Fooled Again became a timeless classic and gave the band a global fan base.

During the 1970s they became even more famous and had a lot of touring successes. With Quadrophenia in 1973 and The Who By Numbers in 1975 they were soon on to multiple platinum status and by the time 198 rolled around Who Are You became one of their more famous songs to date, however, that was short lived due to a tragedy in which the death of their drummer Moon died just three weeks after the song was released.
The rest of the band members reunited for a major tour during 96 and 97. A mere two years later they again joined up for some performances. This success led to the 2000 tours in both the U.S. and the U.K. During 2002 they again rejoined and did five more shows that were their last shows for Entwistle as he died in June of that year. They were now down to two original members. Daltrey and Townshend. They would continue on with their U.S. tour later. 2006 brought about the release of Endless Wire. This was their first studio album since their reign in 82. They did another major tour and after a brief run during 2008, this was their last tour until their 2012/2013 North American Tour.
