The Who are among the most influential rock bands from the early days of rock and roll. Part of their legacy includes impacting numerous bands that came after them, including Queen and U2. They were also a major influence on the Punk and power pop genres, and popularized rock opera almost single handedly.
The band was formed in 1964 and included an original lineup of Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon and John Entwistle. The Who gained popularity early on with the release in 1965 of their debut album My Generation. The Whos most successful period started four years later when they released the first rock opera called Tommy. This release, combined with their Woodstock appearance and release in 1971 of the album Whos Next, which included the hit songs "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Baba O'Reilly," provided the band with a global fan base.
The most fruitful period for the band was the 1970s. Their tours were a major success, and they had several successful releases, including their 1973 album Quadrophenia, which was the second rock opera released by the band; 1975's The Who By Numbers; and their 1978 multiple platinum album Who Are You. However, three weeks after their 1978 album was released, their drummer Keith Moon died.
In 1996 and 1997 the surviving band members reunited and embarked on a major tour. The band mates got together again two years later for several performances. Their success led to tours of the U.S. and U.K. in 2000. The band members got together and performed five shows in early 2002. John Entwistle died that June. The band now just had two members. Townshend and Daltrey continued touring the US. later in 2002. The Who released Endless Wire in 2006. It was their first studio album to be released since 1982, and was followed up with a major tour. Other than a short stint in 2008, that was the band's final run until their 2012-2013 North American tour.
The Who is like a fine wine that gets better with age and this tour promises to be a blockbuster. See here for tickets http://www.penweb.org/the-who-tickets
