Reno, NV, USA (September 23, 2014) -- With nothing more than string and beads, the women of Guatemala are able to empower themselves and their families with the help of training provided by Mayan Treasure. This non-profit was set up by Jen Kelly to help teach women and children the skill of jewelry making and to then provide a platform for them to sell the jewelry in the states.
Mayan Treasure is currently able to help 25 women and wants to increase that number to 100. With the goal in mind, Mayan Treasured has partnered with MoveYourMountain.org and set up a crowdfunding campaign in hopes to raise $2,000 in 90 days. This money will allow the non-profit to order more supplies and teach more women the skills of jewelry making.
"Now, single moms and struggling families have the extra income they need to help put food on their tables, improve their living situations, and have better opportunities in their lives," quoted from Jen Kelly.
The women who make this jewelry receive 40% of the sales. That money goes into a bank account for them. A local woman in Guatemala has also been employed by Mayan Treasure to help teach the women about budgeting their money and saving it for future purchases. The remaining 60% of the sales goes into The Mayan Treasure account which is used to cover supplies and expenses for booths where jewelry is sold. Women in Guatemala can now be empowered to take control of their lives with this new skillset and ability to earn money.
