Drug Overdose Leading Cause of Accidental Death Among Young People, Reports Chapters Capistrano

Chapters Capistrano shares new statistics, revealing drug and alcohol overdoses to be singularly dangerous to young adults.

According to some troubling new research, overdosing on drugs and alcohol remains the leading cause of accidental death among young adults. The research, reported by Business Insider  and shared in a press statement from Chapters Capistrano, notes that these “overdoses are the most common causes of accidental death among young adults, ahead of car accidents and suicide, and they claim some of the youngest victims.” Chapters Capistrano elaborates on this horrific finding in its press statement.

“I suspect that many Americans are unaware of just how pervasive the drug overdose problem is, especially among members of younger generations,” comments Mike Shea, the founder of Chapters Capistrano. “We tend to think of overdosing as something that happens fairly rarely, only to the most serious of drug abuses, but sadly it’s a much more frequent occurrence than that.”

The Business Insider article draws its data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. It reveals that both drugs and alcohol are major problems, and that opiates are the most problematic among the drugs. “Opiates — which include some prescription medications — are the deadliest category of drug, with close to 20,000 deaths per year,” Business Insider notes. Adds Shea, “This is certainly consistent with our own findings, and with the general trend of prescription opiate abuse rising among many different demographics.”

One surprising finding in the new report is that, for as deadly as opiates and other illicit drugs are, “alcohol kills more people than any individual drug.” Adds the article, “Heroin and cocaine rank lower on the chart than any cause of death related to alcohol.” “Alcohol may be legal, but that hardly makes it less dangerous than some of these other substances,” remarks Shea.

The Chapters Capistrano founder is quick to note that recovery is a possibility for those with all manner and degree of addiction. “If you are living with the disease of addiction, there is hope for you yet,” Shea comments. “Chapters Capistrano delivers treatment and rehabilitation programs that are tailored to meet the needs of those dealing with alcohol, with opiates, or with any other addictive substances and narcotics. We work with young people and older people alike, and are zealous to help these overdose death statistics shrink, rather than expand.”
