According to a recent study from the Center for Disease Control, one in 10 deaths among working-age adults is somehow related to alcohol—a truly staggering figure that puts our nation’s struggle with addiction into stark relief. A report from Newsday notes that this study only covers those in the age range 20-64, but adults 65 and older are by no means immune to the disease of addiction. In fact, drug and alcohol abuse are major problems among senior citizens. Chapters Capistrano comments on this disturbing reality in a new statement to the press.
“Many will find it surprising to learn just how many seniors struggle with addiction to drugs or to alcohol,” comments Mike Shea, founder of Chapters Capistrano. The Newsday article goes as far as to suggest that about a tenth of all seniors has an alcohol problem. “An earlier government study indicated that more than 10 percent of adults 65 and older were binge drinkers or heavy drinkers,” the article suggests. “Heavy drinking is defined as 15 or more drinks a week for men and eight or more drinks a week for women. One drink is the equivalent of 1.5 ounces of liquor, 12 ounces of beer or 5 ounces of wine. Because many older adults are retired and living alone, their heavy drinking often goes undetected.”
Adds Shea, “The fact that this demographic is made up of people who are often retired and living alone, or at least living without kids, is important. A lot of these seniors are people who may have experimented with drugs in the 60s and 70s—and now that they have more free time and fewer family and work obligations, they are experimenting with drugs and alcohol all over again. As this report makes plain, the results can be disastrous.”
Other seniors have no history of drug abuse at all—though Newsday says that, in addition to alcohol abuse, many seniors struggle with addiction to painkillers, sleeping medications, and tranquilizers. “The U.S. Administration on Aging says that as many as 11 percent of women 60 and older misuse prescription medications,” the article adds.
“Addiction does not discriminate based on age—and addicts need compassion and rehabilitation, no matter the stage of life they are in,” Shea concludes. “At Chapters Capistrano, we are serious about offering effective, personalized drug and alcohol addiction treatments—to patients of all ages.”
