Over the past three years, the Chula Vista Elementary School District's visual and performing arts (VAPA) program has garnered the attention of numerous high-profile organizations for its commitment to the arts. This year, the California Music Educators Association named VAPA Coordinator Lauren Shelton the 2018 CMEA Outstanding Administrator for the Southern Border Section and state of California.
Shelton has played a prominent role in the District’s mission to grow the number of arts program offered at each school. Since 2015, CVESD has hired approximately 80 new VAPA teachers and partnered with the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, Grammy Award-winning band Switchfoot, and the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory.
To date, the District has invested approximately $15 million to visual and performing arts in an effort to inspire students to unlock their creative potential and achieve academic excellence.
Shelton works alongside CVESD’s Board of Education, VAPA partners, and faculty members to support the District’s vision to provide all students with a fun and enriching educational experience. In 2016, the Board received a Golden Bell Award for excellence in VAPA by the California School Boards Association.
