New publication by Jacob Gelt Dekker: The Caribbean

After a life-changing diagnosis in his twenties, Dutch entrepreneur Jacob Gelt Dekker (b. 1948) needed to reboot. He set sail from his home in Key West, embarking on an odyssey around the Caribbean islands, navigating treacherous waters and nations forever shaped by the Age of Discovery and transatlantic slave trade. This is his story.

The Caribbean offers us an accessible and entertaining survey of this fascinating region that goes well beyond the usual boundaries of a history book. It is a unique, sharp-witted travelogue in which the author combined his in-depth knowledge of the Caribbean with historical narration and a bit of fantasy.

Informed by personal experience and his vast knowledge of the region, Jacob Gelt Dekker presents us with an unconventional account that is key to understanding the Caribbean and its peoples then and now. Dekker managed to turn the history of the Caribbean into an entertaining tale of piracy, battle and superstition; current affairs alternate with enlightening anecdotes about historical figures.

The Caribbean reads like a novel, providing us with a rollicking narrative and a rich brew of colorful facts.

Proceeds will benefit the Fulbright Center in Amsterdam.
