Grammar Chic Points to Resumes as Essential Stop on the Path to Better Work-Life Balance

When work and life are at continuing odds with one another, Grammar Chic encourages employees to polish up their resumes and explore new employment options.

Looking to achieve better work-life balance? It may be time to re-enter the job market and find a position with a company that offers more flexibility. While some employers are making changes following employee feedback, others might not be the right fit for everyone depending on where they are in their life and career. Grammar Chic encourages individuals who are not content with their work-life balance to take the time to polish up their resume as they start exploring different job opportunities.

“Work-life balance means something different to everyone, so there isn’t a single formula for achieving it,” says Amanda Clark, CEO of Grammar Chic. “But if you’re unhappy with the ratio of time spent working versus time spent doing other things, it may be time to find a new job. You can make other changes in your life too, but when you spend a large portion of your day at work, you want it to be spent somewhere that you feel valued and appreciated, and where your time is respected.”

As individuals begin considering their options and planning a path for the future, updating their resume should be one of the first stops, asserts Clark. Whether they are seriously considering a change or just seeing what is out there, having a current resume is always an asset. It makes applying for jobs more efficient because only some small tweaks to customize the resume to the role are necessary, and should an unexpected opportunity pop up, they can jump on it more quickly.

According to a recent study, more than 11 percent of Americans work more than 50 hours per week, and 33 percent work on holidays or weekends as well. With increasing job demands and limited flexibility, that means there more hours spent in the office or letting work drift into time spent at home too. The study revealed that some of the short-term effects of poor work-life balance are missing important life events, less time spent with family and friends, ruined time spent with family and friends (due to being interrupted by work activities), and lack of focus and engagement.

But the impact doesn’t stop there. Poor work-life balance can also affect work performance. The study noted consequences such as poor morale, poor productivity, high turnover, and feeling burnt-out or fatigued. In the long-term, working more than 55 hours per week can increase risk of depression, anxiety, coronary heart disease, stroke, and more. When employees aren’t happy at work or at home – and aren’t performing at optimal levels or taking care of their health – no one wins.

“While finding a new job isn’t a guaranteed solution, it can certainly make a difference,” says Clark. “As you look at job postings or interview for positions, find out about the company culture, time off, opportunities to work from home, and flexibility with scheduling. Do your research and don’t just take any job that comes your way; make sure it enables you to make changes to achieve better work-life balance.”

Clark encourages individuals to start now by updating their resume and taking steps to keep it current as they start the job search. A well-crafted resume can demonstrate a candidate’s ability to work well independently or remotely while still achieving desired results. It can show major accomplishments and how they have benefited companies and their clients. These can all lead the way into discussions regarding work flexibility and the ability to work smarter, not harder.
