Billy Joel, whose real name is William Martin Joel, was born in 1949 in the Bronx, New York. As a child, he and his family moved to Long Island. Mr. Joel's love of music had him studying piano from a young age. But, what really made him decide to jump in the music world was when he saw the Beatles famous performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Billy was not always a solo artist; he was part of many groups, such as The Lost Souls and The Hassles and Attila. He finally began his solo career when Clive Davis signed him to Columbia Records in 1973. It was in this year that Billy released his debut album, titled "Piano Man." The hit song of the same name is featured on this album. Many people agree this his most popular song.
The album that helped Billy Joel become a household name was 1977's The Stranger. The album contained a number of hit songs, including "Only the Good Die Young", "Movin' Out", and "Just The Way You Are". All of these songs made it to Billboard's Top 25 chart. In 1979, Billy won the first two of many Grammy Awards for the song "Just The Way You Are" and album "The Stranger". As much success as Mr. Joel had up to this point, he did not have a number one song until the release of "It's Still Rock and Roll To Me" from the 1978 album 52nd Street. Billy Joel chose to take a break from writing after the release of River of Dreams 1993. Instead, he focused on touring and his personal life.
