More Adults Misusing ADHD Medication to Boost Productivity at Work, Reveals Chapters Capistrano

Misusing ADHD medication is often thought of as something that affects the college crowd, however more adults are using these stimulants for work and finding themselves addicted, shares Chapters Capistrano.

With the pressures of achieving good grades in college and balancing a heavy workload with a busy social life, many college students turn to stimulants to help them focus. This often comes in the form of medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) such as Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta, or Vyvanse. However, recent surveys have found that more adults in the workforce are turning to these medications as well. They are feeling growing pressure to increase their performance and productivity.  Orange County luxury drug and alcohol rehab center Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding this growing trend and the dangers associated with stimulant misuse and addiction.

“Much of the focus has been on college students misusing these medications, but the reality is that this trend is making its way into the workplace as well,” says Mike Shea, founder of Chapters Capistrano. “The job market is tight and employees are feeling the pressure to perform. They’re taking on increasing responsibilities, facing tight deadlines, and trying to meet performance goals. This can be a lot to handle and people are turning to stimulants as a way to boost their focus and get more done.”

According to the New York Times, “Many young workers insist that using the drugs to increase productivity is on the rise – and that these are drugs used not to get high, but hired.” Although there is a lack of reliable data to pinpoint quantifiable results, dozens of people have been interviewed regarding their use. The article notes that “most spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of losing their jobs or access to the medications.”

Just like college students, adults have many resources for obtaining these drugs. Some go through dealers or friends while others fake symptoms to get a prescription of their own. With such a prevalence of ADHD diagnoses, some doctors do not take the time to give a complete evaluation before prescribing medication. This makes it even easier for people to gain access.

“Oftentimes the dangers of misusing these medications are overlooked,” says Shea. “People take them with the thought that it will improve their focus and concentration so they can push through a project and then they’ll stop. But more tasks and deadlines build and they worry that if they stop, they won’t be as productive. However, not everyone has the same response to these medications. In some people they can actually result in less focus, increased anxiety, and trouble sleeping. These effects can take a negative toll on their productivity.”

In an effort to drive their career forward, they may actually be holding it back and creating a host of other issues, says Shea. It is important that people learn how to manage priorities and balance their workload so that they are not burning themselves out and turning to unhealthy measures to stay ahead. Fortunately drug rehab centers like Chapters Capistrano can support adults in overcoming drug addiction and developing more effective strategies for coping. There are alternative methods for dealing with stress and improving concentration that are much safer, notes Shea.
