When it comes to managing chronic pain, many people turn to prescription painkillers for relief, but in recent years overdose deaths and opioid addiction have been on the rise. Whereas at one time recreational misuse was more of an issue, now the focus is on addiction, reveals an article on Science 2.0. Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding the increase in opioid addiction and growing emphasis on treatment and prevention.
“Many prescriptions carry a risk of addiction that patients are not always aware of,” says Mike Shea, founder of the drug and alcohol rehab center in Orange County. “Or they are more focused on relieving their pain than the potential for addiction. Identifying these issues early on and providing access to treatment can support recovery before things become more serious. Also, offering alternatives to painkillers can be a step in prevention.”
According to the study, the overprescribing of painkillers has become a prominent issue when it comes to addiction. Physicians and patients alike are relying on these medications as a long-term way to manage chronic pain. Over time this continued use can lead to addiction and the risk of overdosing. It is vital that drug and alcohol treatment programs are made accessible and people struggling with addiction are supported in getting help.
“Through comprehensive treatment, clients can overcome addiction and develop more effective strategies for dealing with pain and other contributing factors,” notes Shea. “They can become more proactive in finding alternative methods for relieving pain and reducing reliance on prescription painkillers.”
Prevention is also an important part of reducing addiction risk. The study suggests methods such as “public education on the risks of prescription opioids, and wider use of state prescription drug monitoring program (PDMPs) data to alert prescribers to possible doctor-shopping by patients.” Dr. Andrew Kolodny of the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University who is lead author of the study explains, “We need to prevent new cases of opioid addiction and we need to expand access to treatment for the millions of Americans who are already addicted. Without better access to addiction treatment, overdose deaths will remain high and heroin will keep flooding in.”
“We need to continue working to break down the stigma surrounding addiction and educate people about available treatment,” adds Shea. “For so many people, drug and alcohol treatment programs have saved their lives and allowed them to get a new start.
