LOS ANGELES, Calif. - May 2, 2018 - They say it’s good to start small. That’s exactly what two filmmakers are counting on in a new Kickstarter campaign launched last week. Ron Fernandez and Esmarelda VillaLobos are giving investors a new obsession by offering contribution rewards including a series of limited edition collectible pinback buttons featuring artwork hand designed by the filmmakers themselves. The images on the pins will later appear in the film as Easter eggs.
“You’re buying a piece of the film,” said VillaLobos. “We’re artists at the end of the day and if we can capture your attention with a one inch button we are hoping that trust in our aesthetic will bleed on to the screen.”
Their first project is CULT, a low budget supernatural thriller/comedy which Fernandez wrote and will direct. The film centers on a woman’s dangerous descent into a mysterious Los Angeles cult.
Interested supporters can choose from the more recognizable Kickstarter rewards like movie posters and Limited Edition DVD’s, but those looking to get in on the pin collecting craze can purchase a Level One Pledge pin for as little as $5. Serious collectors can splurge on the Level Three Master pins for $25, and while some might gawk at the price tag it is important to note the product’s rarity.
“We are only manufacturing one hundred Level Three pins at a time in any given batch,” VillaLobos warned, “so get ‘em before your buddy does.”
