The rock band U2 was established in 1976 in Dublin, Ireland by the group's drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. They were originally called Feedback and were a Rolling Stones and Beatles tribute band with a lineup of Mullen, Dave "The Edge" Evans and Dik Evans, Dave's older brother, along with Paul "Bono" Hewson. About six months later the older Evans brother left the band. The band had changed its name to The Hype. The group was now a quartet, like it is today. Shortly after that they changed the band's name one last time to U2. In 1978 the band won a Limerick talent show. They used the money they won to record their demo tape. By the end of 1978 Paul McGuiness had become their manager.

In fall 1979 U2 released an EP entitled Three. In Ireland it was a big hit. Their single "Another Day" topped the Irish charts in 1980, which led to Island Records offering the band a contract. Although U2 was successful at home at this point, it took awhile for the band to gain the attention of music fans abroad. They started this process when they released Boy, their first studio album, which spawned their hit song "I Will Follow." Thirty years following its release, this song is still a regular part of U2 performances. U2 was able to gain a following in the United Kingdom during the early and middle 1980s. In 1981 the band released October, spawning the hit singles "Gloria" and "Fire." War was the first U2 album to top the charts of any country and did so in the U.K. The album's three singles "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Two Hearts Beat as One" and "New Year's Day" were all hits in different countries.
U2 finally achieved mainstream success abroad in 1987 when they released their album The Joshua Tree. It has sold more than 25 million worldwide copies and been certified 6 times platinum in the United Kingdom and diamond in the U.S. U2 had another hit album when they released Achtung Baby in 1991. It has sold more than 8 million U.S. copies. In order to meet fans' changing musical tastes, the band had to reinvent itself during the 1990s. They incorporated different sounds from various genres in order to do this, including industrial and dance into their albums. U2 also came up with new innovations for entertaining fans by adding visual influences and multimedia during their Zoo TV tour.
With the release of their album All That You Can't Leave Behind, the foursome returned to their roots, including their hit single "Beautiful Day." The band released their album How To Dismantle An Atomic Band in 2004, spawning the chart-topping single "Vertigo," which appeared in a series of commercials marketing Apple's iPod. No Line On The Horizon was released by the band in 2009. It topped numerous charts and in multiple countries has been certified platinum. U2 released the album Songs of Innocence in 2014. Over the course of the band's career, U2 has recorded or performed with Johnny Cash, Green Day, Paul McCartney, B.B. King and many other leading musical artists.
