Throughout the country, countless young men and women are preparing to receive their college diploma, many of them within the next month and a half. As they do so, their focus inevitably shifts from the academic to the professional; pending graduates are sending out resumes and seeking to line up work for their immediate post-college years, and as they do so, they must be wary of common job search potholes. In a new statement to the press, Grammar Chic, Inc. highlights some of these potholes, and offers tips on avoiding them.
“Those who are preparing to graduate should make full use of the resources currently available to them,” comments Amanda Clark, the Chief Executive Officer of Grammar Chic, Inc. “That means going to visit campus career centers but also reaching out to alumni associations. Failing to make these connections while still in school is a big mistake.”
Another big mistake: Maintaining a haphazard social media presence. “Hiring managers look at Facebook and LinkedIn, which can be potentially bad news for college students,” Clark offers. “Clean up your Facebook page. Remove any Spring Break photos that you might not want potential bosses to see. And ensure that your LinkedIn page is optimized with any part-time job experience, internships, or volunteer work you may have under your belt.”
Still another job search mistake that recent graduates sometimes make is failing to properly polish their resume and cover letter. “Even if you don’t have a great deal of professional work experience just yet, you can still formulate a resume that speaks to your desirability as a job candidate,” Clark states.
Often, this means enlisting the services of a professional resume writing company. “Don’t make the mistake of assuming professional resume writers are beyond your price range,” Clark concludes. “We are happy to work with recent graduates and to provide resume writing services that are reasonably priced. Consider it an investment in your career—one that could pay off big time down the road.”
