Many medications come with both positive effects and potentially negative side effects, and physicians must weigh risks versus rewards as they prescribe these medicines. When it comes to opioid painkillers, however, more and more physicians believe that the risks outweigh the rewards—and some have stated so, quite publically. Chapters Capistrano has responded to this trend with a new statement to the press.
“At Chapters Capistrano, we have treated many individuals in the throes of opioid addiction, and we know that it often starts with a seemingly harmless prescription for pain relieving medication,” says Mike Shea, the founder of the Southern California drug and alcohol rehab center. “Painkiller addiction can develop quickly, and can also lead to even more devastating and dangerous drugs—including heroin.”
A report from Safety and Health Magazine suggests that many doctors stand with Shea on the issue of painkillers and their potential dangers. The article notes that the American Academy of Neurology has issued its own statement, declaring the risks of prescription painkillers to outweigh the benefits. The statement describes prescription painkiller-related illnesses and deaths as a “rapidly emerging public health epidemic.”
“Opioids have shown to be effective for short-term pain relief, but no substantial evidence exists for long-term pain relief without users facing the risk of overdose, dependency or addiction,” notes the article. The AAN statement also states that half of patients who take painkillers for at least three months end up taking them for a full five years or more.
“Since the late 1990s, more than 100,000 people have died in connection with use of prescription painkillers,” remarks the Safety and Health article.
According to Shea, those who have found themselves increasingly dependent on prescription painkillers should reach out for help—perhaps to a drug rehab center like Chapters Capistrano. “Don’t make the mistake of thinking that this is a minor medical concern, or that real addiction could never happen to you,” he cautions. “This truly is an epidemic, but there is healing available for anyone who is serious about recovery. Contact Chapters Capistrano to learn more about the different treatment options available.”
