Japan’s Admire Rakti, the favourite to win the upcoming Melbourne Cup 2014 was assigned 0.5 kilograms penalty for his win in the Caulfield Cup. The 0.5 kg penalty has also been the lowest Caulfield Cup penalty since the year 1980 when the notable Australian Thoroughbred racehorse Ming Dynasty escaped penalty. ABC Online reported that if the Japanese galloper manages to win Australia's biggest race he will carry the biggest weight since the Bart Cummings-trained Think Big won in 1975.
On 4th November Admire Rakti will be running with the top weight of 58.5 KGs for the $6.3 million race. The announcement of the Caulfield Cup race was announced by Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter on Monday morning. After the announcement the angered owner of Admire Rakti, Riichi Kondo threatened to pull out Rakti from the upcoming race on 4th November; later reports confirmed that Kondo has decided to keep Rakti in the race for Melbourne Cup.
Racing Victoria officials, especially chief handicapper Greg Carpenter has taken the decision to penalize Rakti’s extra 0.5 kilograms to maintain justice between the winner and the horses that finished behind him. "While the Caulfield Cup was not run in fast time, Admire Rakti was enormously impressive making a long sustained run down the middle of the track," Carpenter said. "He was strong through the line at the end of 2400m, suggesting that 3200m at Flemington would be to his liking.”
He added "In making a decision on whether to penalize the horse in the Melbourne Cup for his maiden Group 1 triumph, I had to strike a balance between the terms on which those that finished behind him at Caulfield would meet him next start, and the new wave of rivals that awaits him at Flemington."
Despite the penalty Rakti remains as the favourite to win among the Melbourne cup horses due to his impressive performs in the past races. Sources report that punters are still optimistic about Raktis chances to win, in spite of the extra weight Admire Rakti remains a clear favourite for the Melbourne Cup at $4.
