Los Angeles, CA - May 1, 2018 - After a 15-year break, director Alan Rudolph returns to the big screen with ‘RAY MEETS HELEN’, a late-in-life rom-com to be released theatrically on May 4th.
Life has an infamous reputation of throwing twist and turns our direction when we least expect it. Growing up, most imagined we’d have everything figured out by age fifty – who we are, what we want, what we need. Maybe, it takes realizing that no matter how old we are, we still have the opportunity to reinvent ourselves and find love in places and with people we’d never expect.
Rudolph, “one of American cinema’s great unabashed romantics [who] believes in the beauty and rejuvenating power of art, and of love,” describes MUBI’s Greg Cwik, returns with the late-in-life rom-com, ‘RAY MEETS HELEN’, to remind us that love is unexpected and has no age limits. The film’s weeklong nationwide theatrical will begin on Friday, May 4th in several major U.S. cities, reuniting Rudolph with Keith Carradine and starring an award-winning cast of Sondra Locke, Samantha Mathis and Jennifer Tilly.
‘RAY MEETS HELEN’ follows two, lonely middle-aged people who are burdened with money woes and life regrets. Haunted by their past’s missed opportunities, lonely and tired of searching for companionship, both Ray and Helen undergo an enhancing self-reinvention. As there’s a sudden reversal of luck as Ray meets Helen, as the two cannot help but be infatuated the others “new”, enhanced personas.
But, life’s true reversal of fate occurs when they fall for each other’s true selves, as hand-in-hand, they’re ready to embark on an unexpected journey of a lifetime.
“His is a cinema of emotional vulnerability, stolen glances and scarred hearts, pasts that come back, the lonely in search of acceptance, those that fall in love with every person they kiss and those that never fall in love, who can’t. Rudolph makes a compelling case in defense of sentimentality, in defense of the lovesick and amorous,” continued Cwik.
TriCoast Entertainment and Moonstone Entertainment’s weeklong nationwide theatrical of ‘RAY MEETS HELEN’ will begin Friday, May 4th in major U.S. cities including, Los Angeles (Beverly Hills, Encino, Pasadena), Florida (Tampa, Miami), Cleveland, Seattle, Phoenix, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Denver and New York, with Q&A’s in Beverly Hills and Seattle, and Rudolph’s first-ever retrospective in New York.
“What makes Rudolph one of the great romantics, his ideas earnest and unfeigned, is in his acceptance that sometimes love isn’t enough. Sometimes it doesn’t win; sometimes ambitions are not achieved. A painter may not be a genius, or find the greatness he desires, while the boozy sleaze for whom he’s buying drinks will; the woman of one’s dream may evanescence, disappear. Love frays. It is fragile, and painful, and worth fighting for,” wrote Cwik.
Producers for ‘RAY MEETS HELEN’ are Ernst “Etchie” Stroh of Moonstone Entertainment, who also produced Rudolph’s Academy Award-nominated feature, ‘Afterglow’, and Steven J. Wolfe (‘500 Days of Summer’) of Sneak Preview Entertainment, with Lesley Ann Warren, Keith Carradine and Sondra Locke as executive producers.
