CANNES ANNOUNCEMENT: Sonia Escolano’s elevated Spanish cult film, ‘HOUSE OF SWEAT AND TEARS’ (‘Casa de sudor y Lágrimas’), one of six features in post-production or recently completed, will be presented at the upcoming Frontières Buyers Showcase on May 13th at Palais K, Level 4, Palais Des Festivals at 16:00.
The Frontières Platform is a co-presentation between Fantasia International Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival Marché du Film, and is co-funded by Creative Europe, with the support of Wallimage, Cinema Chile and Telefilm Canada, reported ScreenDaily’s Ben Dalton.
Produced in Spain by Escolano and Francisco Javier González from Sudo y lágrimas Films, ‘HOUSE OF SWEAT AND TEARS’ has acquired new sales agents, Daisy Hamilton and Dean Fernando from ROCK SALT RELEASING for this year’s Cannes Marché Du Film, with producers screening footage for buyers, sales agents and festival programmers.
Written and directed by one of the only female directors within the horror world, Escolano’s (‘The Vampire in the Hole’, ‘Myna Has Gone’, ‘Cinq minutes’), ‘HOUSE OF SWEAT AND TEARS’ is a rare, hair-raising thriller, based on the tale of Amparo Cuevas and a Spanish woman from El Escorial. The is ominous and mystifying atmospheric horror is creepy and slow, creating the sentiment of uneasiness, as if one was caught watching something they shouldn’t have been watching.
As the story goes, the Virgin spoke through the Spanish woman, Amparo Cuevas, bringing people from all four corners of the world, leaving behind their jobs, families and lives to become members of a cult-like, religious sect that practices the path of poverty, pain and purification of sins under strict coexistence rules. The members of the cult, Sophie (Coline Charvin), Emma (Padi Padilla), Jérôme (Pablo Macho) and Ruth (Paula Mateu), were randomly selected as an act of human nature. Darkness begins to settle in when a mysterious character that embodies Jesus Christ himself appears in the house, causing an unbalancing of members, as an intense power struggle takes hold, allowing for only one to be the flock leader of the sect. ‘HOUSE OF SWEAT AND TEARS’ provides amplifying claustrophobia, mysteriousness, and extreme unease, as viewers experience the emotions of each member of the cult, allowing for an up-close and personal peephole into their painful exploration of their personal lives and struggles to cope with the stress and fear that controls them.
In addition, ‘HOUSE OF SWEAT AND TEARS’ has been selected exclusively by the Spanish government to promote top Spanish cinema at this year’s Cannes Film Festival Marché du Film.
