Germany dominates in the global clay tile and roofing trade. In 2014, Germany exported 587 thousand tonnes of clay tiles and roofing totaling 188 million USD, 3% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Poland, where it supplied 32.8% of its total clay tiles and roofing exports in value terms, accounting for 87.5% of Poland's total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Germany was a net exporter of clay tiles and roofing. Over the period under review, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced.
France and Spain were among the other main global suppliers of clay tiles and roofing in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were China (+39.1% per year) and Hungary (+12.5% per year). With this rapid growth, China significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.
In 2014, Germany's top 5 trading partners were Poland, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium and Denmark, with a combined 70.5% share of Germany's clay tiles and roofing exports.
