France continued its dominance in the global chalk and dolomite trade. Still, 2014 was not a banner year for the French in this trade, exporting 485 thousand tonnes of chalk and dolomite totaling 32 million USD, a full 17% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Belgium, where it supplied 39.2% of its total chalk and dolomite exports in value terms, accounting for 65.3% of Belgium's total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, France was a net exporter of chalk and dolomite. Over the period under review, exports exceeded imports in value terms. The difference in physical terms was even more pronounced.
Germany and Belgium were among the other main global suppliers of chalk and dolomite in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were the Philippines (+12.7% per year) and Peru (+14.8% per year).
In 2014, France's top 5 trading partners were Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy, with a combined 88.1% share of France's chalk and dolomite exports. The share of Belgium increased significantly (+9.0 percentage points), while the share of Spain illustrated negative dynamics (-4.2 percentage points).
