Plastic Surgeon Dr. Nia Banks Featured in New Book, “Being a Woman Surgeon”

The founder of Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery was also invited to speak on her experiences at a special event at the University of Maryland

Lanham, MD –  Dr. Nia Banks – board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery – was recently featured in a new book, Being a Woman Surgeon: Sixty Women Share Their Stories. Edited by Dr. Preeti R. John, the book highlights the unique experiences and challenges of women surgeons.

In addition to being featured in the book, Dr. Banks was also a guest speaker at the book’s launch at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

“I was delighted to be featured in Dr. John’s book,” says Dr. Banks. “Although the pool of female surgeons is growing, it’s still a male-dominated field, especially in plastic surgery. By contributing to this book, it’s my hope that myself and my fellow surgeons can inspire a new generation of women surgeons.”

Being a Woman Surgeon is the first anthology of its kind, as the book features contributions by a multi-disciplinary group of female surgeons. The book launch was held on May 29th, 2015, in the SMC Campus Center at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

During the event, Dr. Banks spoke of her experiences as a woman in the field of surgery, and how these experiences inspired her to found the Beaux Arts Institute of Plastic Surgery. Today, the Beaux Arts Institute has two locations: one in Lanham, Maryland, and the other in Glenn Dale, Maryland. Both locations serve the greater Washington, DC and Baltimore regions.
