Calorie consumption in the Middle East and North Africa region is on the rise, based on data compiled by webteb.com, a leading health portal in the region.
According webteb.com’s infographic, the intake of calories throughout the region has steadily risen in recent years, boosted by increased sugar, milk, and meat consumption in several countries in the Middle East.
Saudi Arabia topped sugar intake amongst countries in MENA at 39.2 kgs per capita, followed by Morocco at 36 kgs, and Lebanon at 33.7 kgs. Egypt and Algeria round up the top five with sugar consumption 26.5 and 24.5 kgs per capita, respectively.
Per capita consumption of livestock milk throughout the region is estimated at 44.6 kg, more than half of global average at 78.1 kg per capita; while per capita consumption of meat is at 25.5 kg, about 70 per cent of the meat consumed by the whole world.
The infographic, found on webteb.com, also shows current levels of energy consumption per capita in the MENA region, led by Tunisia with a daily average 3,310 calories, followed by Morocco with 3,230 calories, then by the United Arab Emirates and Libya, each with 3,140 calories.
At the lower end of the daily energy consumption tape shows Djibouti with 2,260 calories, Palestine with 2,130 calories and Yemen, which has the lowest daily energy consumption intake at 2,030 calories.
“Obesity is one of the most basic risks associated with high calorie intake, and is one of the most alarming health conditions throughout the Middle East and North Africa. There are a wide variety of diseases and health conditions also associated with excessive calorie intake, and hopefully with this data we can help put a spotlight on unhealthy eating habits and lifestyle practices in the region,” reports webteb.com, a leading online portal which aims to provide comprehensive medical information throughout the Arab world.
