MIAMI - April 2, 2015 – FIU and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) just unveiled a 130,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art rehearsal and production studio, and announced details of a new partnership that will include collaborative research, talent development and real-world experience for FIU students in shipboard operations.
The Royal Caribbean Production Studio is on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus and features three-story studios, a 300-seat theater, 20,000-square-foot costume-making facility, 10 rehearsal studios, a recording room and video editing space.
The Royal@FIU World Stage Collaborative will create new opportunities for students in FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the College of Architecture + the Arts (CARTA). These include paid internships, custom curricula and behind-the-scenes access to Royal Caribbean’s experts and facilities.
“This exciting new partnership builds upon our collective assets to advance unprecedented experiential learning and research opportunities, while attracting top talent to both organizations,’’ said FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg. “It’s an example of how we are forging relationships between industry and the academy. Our collaboration is multi-faceted, long-term, globally focused and with tremendous potential for expansion across multiple disciplines.”
Students will gain hands-on experience in cruise line operations, stage management, lighting, stage design, audio engineering and production. In addition, FIU faculty and staff will have access to RCL marketing and sales data from its six cruise brands to conduct original research.
"We are excited to partner with FIU on our new entertainment facility, not only because it will enable Royal Caribbean to continue to produce world-class entertainment for our ships, but because it will provide an opportunity for FIU students to receive a unique and hands-on education in the hospitality industry,” said Richard D. Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean. “Royal Caribbean considers South Florida home, and what better way to give back to the community than to be able to enrich the education of FIU students.”
The collaborative represents the latest FIU effort to create innovative public-private partnerships that bridge private industry with academia to promote talent development, research and economic vitality.
