Martindale Dental partnered with Gillian's Place, a shelter for abused women and children, offering $100 in free dental services in exchange for a charitable contribution to the shelter. This program yielded excellent results with almost 200 patients making donations raising over $2000 for Gillian's place in a span of 4 days. Martindale Dental is continuing to work with other charities to bring similar initiatives to help raise awareness and also to help make dentistry a little more affordable.

Martindale Dental, a Toronto Dental Practice, is aware of the high costs involved when visiting the dentist. In Canada, about 32% of the population do not have any dental benefits which further compounds the problem. In fact, one in every five people in Canada state that cost is the biggest barrier for them to visit the dentist. Dentistry in Canada is a very high overhead business with staff wages, expensive equipment and supply costs contributing to a large part of the expenses. Until this changes, there is not a lot to be done when it comes to reducing the cost of care.

The dental profession at large should be doing its part to help those who are truly in need. Dentistry is not just about teeth whitening, veneers and other cosmetic procedures. Gum diseases and tooth decay are the most common diseases which affect children, adolescents, adults and the elderly alike. In fact, dental caries affects 60% to 90% of schoolchildren and the vast majority of adults in most industrialized countries. Among 5-to 17-year-olds, dental decay is five times as common as asthma and seven times as common as hay fever. Research points to a connection between poor oral health and diabetes as well as respiratory diseases; poor oral health may also contribute to heart disease, stroke, and the risk of having premature, low birth-weight babies. It costs our economy millions of dollars in lost work/wages/missed school because of tooth decay and it's related problems.
