28 January 2015 - United Kingdom - Meetings are becoming more connected as they integrate technology. Rarely now in a meeting will you be confined to the 4 walls with most meeting rooms having an internet connection and a conference phone.
There are more than 5 billion mobile devices in use today, said Michael Peachy of Salesfore.com, who wrote recently in Wired about the company’s upcoming technology conference. People now Tweet things in meetings, search things on the internet and share information. “Behind every device is an attendee, and they are plugged into apps and social networks,” Peachy said. “The way conferences use mobile devices to present content is critical.”
The increasing digitalization of conferences will also affect networking. “Making new professional connections is one of the best reasons for attending a conference,” Peachy said. “However, unless you’re a power networker, it can be difficult to grow your contact base, even at a big conference. Connected conferences excel at forming real-time communities.”
According to a new study of conference planning professionals, around 42 percent of respondents said technology will be increasingly influential in the meetings industry over the next 15 years. Meetings will increasingly incorporate virtual components and the number of virtual events will continue to rise.
Ms Jiminez from W12 Conferences, an events venue providing meeting rooms for hire in London, said it is important for event planners to find spaces that allow for the virtual elements. Ms Jiminez said “more and more, this includes virtual elements to help engage attendees and accommodate remote access, internet usage and teleconferencing.”
