Rockwood, MI based Children with Hair Loss (501c3) is furthering their mission of “Covering Young Heads to Heal Young HeartsTM” through the launch of a new mobile app, designed by 3V Business Solutions, in the spring of 2015.
Children with Hair Loss (CWHL) provides free human hair replacements to children with medically-related hair loss. The app is part of an ongoing collaboration effort with 3V. CWHL and 3V partnered over the summer of 2014 in an effort to rebuild donation data collection software. The partners have identified and evaluated opportunities with mobile technology to extend and grow the Children With Hair Loss brand. Features of the app will be designed to streamline the current donation processes and provide mobile and web users an interactive experience for the CWHL community.
Features of the new Children with Hair Loss App
The first core feature will be personal logins for hair and monetary donors. The current donation process requires that donors fill out a form, either paper or online. The downside is, they must fill out all their personal information each time they donate. The new app will allow them to store information while submitting their first donation so when they 8donate in the future, they only need to enter the donation type/dollar amount.
Hair donors will be excited to use the new “Donation Status” feature. CWHL volunteers will now digitally record when each hair donation has arrived at CWHL headquarters. Donors can log into their account and see who have signed up for the app will receive an automatic notification when their hair has been received. arrived. This will alleviate concerns of donors, as well as the number of phone calls CWHL receives daily concerning about the status of donated hair.
The donation button will make it for donors who visit CWHL online, at their office or at beauty and charity events around the country. Instead of asking donors to fill out a lengthy paper form, they can simply install the app on any mobile device and quickly donate from anywhere in the world.
In addition to monetary donations, the charity relies on hair donations from their generous donors and participating salons around the country that help facilitate the haircut/hair donation process. Currently, this is a time consuming process for donors that includes searching for salons or making phone calls to the charity. “First of all, you have dozens of people calling the charity,” says CEO Regina Villemure. “We have to find out where the donor is located and then try to find a participating salon near them. This can be time consuming because a salon might have participated in a one time event with us but doesn’t do donation cuts on a regular basis.”
The new app will allow salons throughout the United States to register their contact information, location, address, and phone number. When someone would like to donate their hair, they can easily log on and immediately find a salon in their area.
The app will also allow donors to purchase CWHL merchandise like t-shirts, bracelets, hats, and hoodies. Merchandise profits help ease the cost of operations for the charity and the branded merchandise helps spread awareness.
A photo gallery will also be included in the app. This will feature a live stream of images from CWHL’s Facebook and Twitter pages, including participants’ before and after haircuts.
CWHL events will also be posted (annual Charity Ball, golf outing, etc.), and supporters can easily find information and purchase tickets for them through the app.

Michael Lucy, President of 3V Business Solutions, expressed his love of working with the charity and how much the new app will help them. “We are excited to deliver a product that will have a national and global footprint,” says Lucy. “CWHL and 3V worked very hard to develop a strategy that met CWHL goals while being cost effective for the charity.”
Ultimately, CWHL and 3V decided upon a hybrid app solution. Hybrid apps run on mobile devices as well as computers and they integrate technology. Lucy further elaborated, “Hybrid apps have most of the functionality of native apps yet are more budget friendly, in this case, a savings of about 75% of the cost of developing individual iOS and Android apps. I must note that this project would not have been possible without the advancements in hybrid platforms, HTML5, and phonegap tools.”
The beta release for the app will be undergoing testing with a full release in late Spring of 2015.
