Addiction to dangerous drugs comes with many major risks—including the risk of overdose. Sadly, this includes even many drugs that are perfectly legal, even physician-prescribed. Addiction to legal painkillers continues to climb, yet many who are addicted have no idea what to do in the event of an overdose. Chapters Capistrano, a southern California addiction treatment center, has issued a new statement to the press, commenting on this troubling trend.
“An overdose does not have to be fatal, yet for those who are unprepared, it typically is,” comments Mike Shea, the founder of Chapters Capistrano. “At our California drug rehab facility, of course, we try to help addicts move into recovery, kicking the chance of an overdose altogether. Ultimately, this is the only way to truly protect yourself from an accidental overdose death: To avoid overdosing altogether.”
A recent Health Day report, meanwhile, confirms that teens and young adults who abuse prescription medications face a high risk of overdose—yet most do not know how to respond when it happens. This is especially true among those involved with “the increasingly popular, non-medicinal use of legal prescription narcotic pain medications, including so-called ‘opioids’ such as Oxycontin and Vicodin.”
The report goes on to note that these drugs, when abused, can slow or even stop one’s ability to breathe. While life-saving interventions are often possible, many narcotic abusers are simply unaware of this.
“There is such a stigma surrounding addiction that many drug abusers are ashamed to seek help, or to make any effort to really understand their problem,” Shea comments. “This means they are unaware of the avenues they have for intervention and, ultimately, for recovery.”
Concludes Shea, “We hope that those who struggle with drug abuse—whether to illicit or doctor-prescribed drugs—will understand the harsh realities of overdose, but also realize that there is always hope for recovery and for healing. We urge those who are in the throes of addiction to look past the stigma and seek a potentially life-saving treatment plan, at a facility such as Chapters Capistrano.
