Healing in Advance by Dr. Alexander G. Watson Makes the Case for Prehabilitation and Why Preparation May Be the Missing Link in Better Surgical Outcomes

In Healing in Advance, Alexander G. Watson presents a practical, patient-centered roadmap for improving health before major medical events, revealing how proactive preparation can strengthen the body, reduce complications, and improve recovery and long-term quality of life.

Alexander Watson, MD is the founder of Admire Medical and a nationally recognized physician specializing in prehabilitation, medical weight management, and performance optimization. He is one of the few physicians worldwide with dual board-certifications in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and Obesity Medicine, a distinction that places him at the intersection of rehabilitation, metabolic health, and preventive care.

Trained at the renowned University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency program, Dr. Watson has built a practice focused on optimizing health before surgery, fitness competitions, or when chronic decline occurs. He is the author of Healing in Advance: Your Prehabilitation Handbook and co-editor of the professional textbook A Prehabilitation Guide for All Providers, advancing a proactive model of care for both patients and clinicians.

Through Admire Medical and his educational YouTube channel, Dr. Watson translates evidence-based medicine into practical strategies for sustainable strength, resilience, and long-term health. This one-on-one interview shares Alexander G. Watson’s background and experience writing Healing in Advance: Your Prehabilitation Handbook.

Tell us about Healing in Advance: Your Prehabilitation Handbook.

What if the most powerful way to heal starts before treatment ever begins?

Most people don’t enter surgery, cancer treatment, or a major medical challenge in optimal health, and that gap can dramatically affect outcomes. Healing in Advance: Your Prehabilitation Handbook shows you how to take control before your body is under stress, giving you a measurable advantage when it matters most.

This clear, empowering guide introduces prehabilitation, a proactive, science-based approach to strengthening your body and mind ahead of medical care. Instead of reacting after the fact, you’ll learn how to prepare using three proven pillars that work best together:

· Exercise to build strength, endurance, and recovery capacity while rebuilding damaged metabolic machinery

· Lifestyle and metabolic health, including nutrition, supplements, and medical weight management

· Neuropsychiatric optimization, such as pain control, sleep improvement, and nicotine cessation

When addressed as a system, even small changes can rapidly improve metabolic health, leading to better surgical outcomes, faster recovery, fewer complications, and a higher quality of life.

From spine surgery to cancer treatment, each chapter explains what to expect, the terms you need to know, and low-risk, practical steps you can discuss with your medical team right away.

Life is stressful. Health challenges raise the stakes. Healing in Advance helps you stop feeling powerless and start preparing, so you can heal stronger, sooner, and with confidence.

What inspired you to write Healing in Advance: Your Prehabilitation Handbook?

The idea for Healing in Advance came from a gap I saw every day in medicine. While co-editing our comprehensive prehabilitation textbook for clinicians, it became clear that the people who could benefit most from this knowledge, patients, could likely never encounter it!

I wanted to change that.

Writing a patient-focused book was a way to translate evidence-based medical insight into language people could actually use.

My goal was to empower readers with the right questions, concepts, and confidence to participate more actively in their care, so they could bring informed conversations to their own medical teams and advocate for better outcomes long before treatment begins.

How did your background and experience influence your writing?

With dual board certifications in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Obesity Medicine, I trained in an environment where prehabilitation wasn’t theoretical, it was built into real care, from organ transplantation and cancer treatment to orthopedic and spine surgery.

Working alongside leaders in the field at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, I helped bring prehabilitation into structured clinical practice and scholarship. That experience led to co-developing and co-editing A Prehabilitation Guide for All Providers with Springer Publishing, in collaboration with Dr. Karen Barr and other experts.

Translating that depth of clinical and academic experience into accessible, patient-centered writing was a natural next step, allowing me to bring a proven medical framework out of textbooks and into everyday health decisions.

What is one message you would like readers to remember?

Preparation is powerful.

Anxiety before a major medical procedure often comes from feeling passive or unprepared, and the most effective way to counter that fear is to take an active role in your health ahead of time.

Healing in Advance provides the knowledge for you to design a preparation plan to build confidence before a major medical procedure.

With this, you may even look forward to surgery because it makes the dream outcome—less pain, cancer remission, health pregnancy and baby—more possible than ever.
