Amphitheater Public School District was recently given The Green Leadership Fleet award for its implementation and use of propane buses. The award was presented by the Valley of the Sun Clean Cities within the U.S. Department of Energy and Propane Education and Research Council. The organization works with transportation departments and community leaders to "save energy and promote the use of domestic fuels and advanced vehicle technologies in transportation." The Green Leadership Fleet Award recognizes the efforts that the Amphitheater School District has made to create innovative and cost-effective transportation services.
The District implemented its propane school bus program roughly five years ago to reduce costs and toxic emissions. Currently, 25 of the district's 125 buses are propane-based. The switch to propane not only helps the environment through reduced emissions but also helps reduce expenses for the school district, with savings of roughly $1.35 per gallon. The costs of the buses and refueling infrastructure are covered mainly by federal grants.
Administrators and organizations like the Valley of the Sun Clean Cities alike, recognize the value of propane buses. James Burns, the District’s executive manager of operational support, said the District has several reasons for using propane buses.
"We’re doing that just as citizens of the world to try to reduce our pollution, especially in the greenhouse gases but also because of the economics,” he said. “It’s quite a bit of efficiency on the financial side, which school districts are always looking for — finding ways to be better with our money."
The Amphitheater Unified School District will consistently strive to provide cutting edge and quality education and service to its students and community. To learn more about programs in the Amphitheater District, click here!
