A Wide Range of After School Programs at JDUSD Offer Students Chances to Learn and Grow in Many Areas

Students in the Jamul-Dulzura Union School District enjoy a wide variety of after school programs that enhance their learning and boost their curiosity and creativity. Although most schools provide after school options, many only provide supervised time for students to finish their homework. At JDUSD, it is understood that the after school hours can not only provide time for homework, tutoring, and studying, but can also be an excellent opportunity for students to join clubs, learn to work with others, and engage in learning topics outside the classroom.

At Jamul Primary and Jamul Intermediate, Kindergarten through fifth grade students are offered  range of programs to join. Mad Science, run by an outside provider, gives students the chance to participate in hands on science experiments and learn about how the world works. The lessons are very interactive and build on students’ curiosity. Art Smarts is also run by an outside program and teaches students about art and gives kids an opportunity to explore their creative side. Students are taught to use a variety of different mediums to express themselves. CYT, an after school youth theater program, also helps develop students’ creative side. Many students who participate in CYT form new relationships, come out of their shell, and take risks on stage.

School-run clubs are also available for K-5 students to join such as Math Club and Literacy Clubs, where teachers support students that are struggling academically, and Computer Lab. where a teacher supports students through online programs that help improve English Language Development and mathematical skills. Jamul Primary and Intermediate also has an amazing garden run by a retired teacher. At Garden Club, students learn about gardening and eating healthy from this teacher. They also learn how to plant, cultivate and care for a garden, and they plan a waste-free meal where they serve up all of their garden delights to family and friends.

The sixth through eighth grade students at Oak Grove Middle School take advantage of the after school tutoring program and the library with computer access to complete assignments and do research. Students can also spend additional time with teachers in a small setting to receive the help they need in the various academic subject areas. This setting helps students stay on track with their learning and projects. Oak Grove Middle School also offers exciting after-school sports which provide students with opportunities that help them develop an active and healthy lifestyle. Tennis is offered throughout the school year twice per week. Other sports such as cross county, soccer, and football are seasonal. Currently OGMS is offering cross country twice per week and stickball once per week. These after school opportunities help students build a positive relationship with their education, as the meaning of school opens up to a wider range of learning and developing outside the classroom.
