Los Angeles, CA - June 29, 2018 - “Susanne Bier’s baby snatching drama A Second Chance is finally coming to the United States after ROCK SALT RELEASING picked up the feature film, which stars Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau,” bylined Deadline’s Peter White.
Directed by Oscar-winning and Emmy-nominated director, Susanne Bier (‘The Night Manager’), ‘A 2nd CHANCE’ is a gritty, high-concept Nordic noir that successfully captures the extreme horrors of child neglect and baby snatching in a thrilling new way cinema rarely experiences, thanks to Critics’ Choice Award nominee for Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who gives a raw, powerful performance in his native tongue as Detective Andreas. Produced by Zentropa, Zentropa International Sweden, FilmFyn and Film I Vast, ‘A 2nd CHANCE’ first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2014 before its Denmark release in 2015.
Arriving to the States in a time where children are forcibly separated from their parents, “the issues surrounding children being separated from their parents front page news in the States, thanks to Donald Trump’s immigration policy, it’s getting a long-awaited theatrical bow in the U.S.,” remarked White.
Hollywood’s newest auteur-driven sales and distribution banner, ROCK SALT RELEASING, struck the U.S. acquisition deal with Susan Wendt from Trustnordisk and will deliver its first theatrical run in LA and other select theaters on July 13th. “I was shocked to see such a moving story hadn’t reached the U.S., and with the baby snatching in the spotlight, we thought now would be a relevant time,” said ROCK SALT RELEASING chief Daisy Hamilton.
Written by Ander Thomas Jensen (‘All You Need is Love’, ‘In A Better World’), ‘A 2nd CHANCE’ parallels two families – one, the happy family of Detective Andreas (Coster-Waldau) and – two, the junkie-couple who leaves their baby boy covered in his own excrement and surrounded by their fumes from heated spoons. But when the unthinkable happens and tragedy strikes Andreas’ family, the sudden tragic death of their son, he sees his life hanging by a thread as he makes a choice that will lead everyone down a rabbit hole of moral and ethical disarray. Rooted in the foundations of love and parenthood, Bier’s direction invokes a strong and empowering female voice with open eyes to reflect our dark world. At its core, ‘A 2nd CHANCE’ is about real people forced into incredibly difficult circumstances, forcing viewers to confront their personal notions about right and wrong, leaving us with the question: Who are we to think we are better than anyone else?
Alongside Coster-Waldau (‘Oblivion’, ‘Mama’), the film stars award-winning Swedish actress, Maria Bonnevie (‘I Am Dina’), Nikolai Lie Kaas (‘Angels & Demons’), and debuting model, Lykke May Andersen. Supporting are Ulrich Thomsen (‘The Blacklist’), Roland Moller (‘Atomic Blonde’), and Peter Harber (‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’).
‘A 2nd CHANCE’ has participated in several film festivals, receiving many accolades including the SIGNIS Award (2014 San Sebastián International Film Festival) and will begin its U.S. weeklong theatrical run on July 13th at Los Angeles’ Arena Cinelounge Sunset and other select theaters. Launched by Hamilton and Dean Fernando, ‘A 2nd CHANCE’ is ROCK SALT RELEASING’s latest project alongside ‘Rotterdam, I Love You’ and Kazuhiro Soda’s ‘Inland Sea’.
