ST. CHARLES, IL - Chicago’s only retail store that caters to the dark tastes of monster & horror art fans will be having its grand opening with the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, but with a quirky twist that will surely attract a crowd. Owners Dove Thiselton & Warwick Price will be transforming themselves into zombies to gnaw the ribbon apart at the 5pm ribbon cutting ceremony for Ghoulish Mortals on Friday, June 29th.
The goal of the store is to present itself as a creepy & cool destination in the Chicagoland area that is not to be missed. “Ghoulish Mortals is very immersive in its theming & unique in its merchandise, so our official grand opening had to boast something equally campy” owner Dove Thiselton said. The grand opening will also feature zombie cupcakes, appetizers and door prizes. “Many of our regular customers and social media followers said they are leaving work early to attend with their kids”, mentioned Dove’s spouse, Warwick Price. “The Chamber is allowing us to close the side street during the actual ribbon ceremony, so no one in the crowd spills out into busy 64 traffic.”
The 1800 square foot store in the heart of Downtown St. Charles has been in soft opening mode since April, allowing the owners a little extra time to finish off the stores extremely detailed set-like décor and stocking the shelves with the work of talented artists, most of which are local to Chicago. The store is proudly filled with signed art prints, jewelry, books, pins, stickers, and props that Thiselton and Price have requested from artists whose work they believe fits the feel of the store. The front of the store is kid friendly, with areas featuring haunted mansion, classic horror, mad scientist, Stranger Things and Cthulhu. The back of the store goes off the rails and is gory, aiming at teens and adults with sections like Carn-Evil, Hillbilly Hack Shack, Mutant Hospital, and Zombies. The store also offers its visitors custom creations that most horror fans would never be able to find elsewhere. Kids can bring in a monster drawing to have made into a hand sewn2-D plush. Older clientele are able to have a picture of their very own head placed in a custom jar or a picture of their tattoo made into a custom prop that looks like a flayed piece of skin. Busy since opening day, Ghoulish Mortals has given Chicagoland the horror store they didn’t know they were in need of. The owners moved from California 3 years ago, and said they were “kinda crushed to find Chicago didn’t have a plethora of horror stores like Los Angeles.” So they decided to take the best of what they loved about the horror shops they used to frequent and mix in elements of set design and a focus on the art of horror. In early Fall, the basement level will open up as a multi-purpose space for parties and calendared classes & events. There is even talk of expanding into the storefront next to them to add in horror Sci-Fi. Whatever they conjure up, Ghoulish Mortals is sure to delight with their well thought out brand of fright. www.ghoulishmortals.com
