Previews began on Tuesday night for Hamilton: An American Musical at the PrivateBank Theatre in Chicago. The long-awaited debut marks the first major performance of the Tony Award-winning Broadway sensation outside of New York City.

Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s best-known Founding Fathers, inspired by Ron Chewnow’s biography Alexander Hamilton. The play’s acclaimed music is an innovative fusion of hip-hop, R&B, and classic Broadway soundtracks.
The play made its Off-Broadway debut at the Public Theater in February 2015 before transferring to the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in August of that year. It received acclaim from audiences and critics alike, winning 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical among other accolades.
The current Chicago production is in residence at the PrivateBank Theatre at 18 W. Monroe St., directed by Thomas Kail, who previously directed the show both on and off-Broadway. The cast includes Miguel Cervantes as Alexander Hamilton, Joshua Henry as Aaron Burr, Ari Afsar as Eliza Hamilton, Alexander Gemignani as King George, and Jonathan Kirkland as George Washington. The production’s official opening night is October 19.
