Ricardo Teamor CEO at Irwin Industries announces ‘Holiday Focus on the Road’ safety campaign

November 2, 2015 - Long Beach Ca., United States - Long Beach, California based Irwin Industries today announced the launch of the company’s 2015 “Holiday Focus on the Road” safety campaign.

The program, which is targeted at the company’s employees, as well as others who share their jobsites, is designed to raise awareness of driving hazards unique to the fourth quarter of each year. According to Irwin Industries’ Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) General Manager Sly Williams, driving during the holiday season can be especially perilous. “A number of events occur between October and January which have the potential to impact safety, yet immediately may not be at the top of a driver’s mind. We want to bring these possible hazards to the top of our drivers’ minds.”

For example, in most parts of the United States, Daylight Saving Time will end on November 1, and this will lead to reduced hours of daylight during evening commutes. Weather may also become a factor for drivers, with winter ushering in rain, snow, sleet, wind and ice. “Our employees work at project locations across the United States,” says Vice President of Operations Kevin Crook. “This means there is no end to the potential weather conditions they may encounter while driving. We want them to remain mindful and prepared for anything.”

With school now in session, more children on foot, bikes, skateboards, etc. are sharing busy streets and intersections with increasingly frazzled holiday commuters - not to mention increased traffic generated by parents dropping off children at school.

Other holiday-related and seasonal driving hazards include: narrowed attention spans for many drivers and pedestrians who may be preoccupied by the demands of the holiday season; distractions caused by mobile devices; an increase in the number of intoxicated or otherwise impaired drivers as a result of holiday parties; and, the unique hazards particular to each individual holiday - for example, trick-or-treaters during Halloween.

According to Irwin Industries CEO Ricardo Teamor, “If this campaign helps prevent just one serious accident, then it has been more than worth it. Nothing, absolutely nothing, is more important than the safety and well-being of our employees and the public at large.”

According to Mr. Williams, Irwin Industries’ 2015 Holiday Focus on the Road safety campaign is rolling out to employees at all Irwin Industries’ project locations over the course of the next few weeks. “We will get the word out with jobsite banners; hard hat stickers; social media updates, tips and alerts; and, of course, one-on-one interaction between employees, EH&S personnel and management.”

While Mr. Williams acknowledges that driving is only one of many possible hazards during the holiday season, “we made a conscious decision this year to really zero in on the road. That’s not to disregard or make light of other seasonal hazards, which I urge everyone to research and be aware of. We just felt the time was right to sharpen our focus on a single message to really ‘drive it home’,” He added that he encourages employees who have questions or wish to learn more about other holiday hazards to speak with their supervisor and / or an Irwin Industries EH&S staff member.
