South Africa dominates in the global wood residue trade. In 2014, South Africa exported 161 thousand tonnes of wood residues totaling 59 million USD, 10% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Saudi Arabia, where it supplied 15.6% of its total wood residue exports in value terms.
Overall, the global wood residue trade reached to 411 million USD, with a CAGR of 6.3% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed decline, falling from 1,173 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 1,065 thousand tonnes in 2014.
In 2014, Germany (9.1%), Poland (7.4%), the U.S. (6.6%), Turkey (6.6%) and China (6.5%) were the leading destinations of wood residue imports, together making up 36.1% of global imports. The share of Germany increased (+5 percentage points), while the share of the U.S illustrated negative dynamics (-3 percentage points).
South Africa and Germany were among the other main global suppliers of wood residues in 2014 with a combined share of 31.0% of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were the Netherlands (+37.4% per year) and Sweden (+23.5% per year). Sweden significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 4% in 2007 to 11% in 2014.
