The Russian Federation dominates in the global unwrought nickel trade. In 2014, Russian Federation exported more than 200 thousand tonnes of unwrought nickel totaling 3.7 billion USD, 2% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was China, where it supplied 34.5% of its total unwrought nickel exports in value terms, accounting for 57.0% of China's total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, the Russian Federation was a net exporter of unwrought nickel. Over that period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was more pronounced due to high import prices.
Canada and Norway were among the other main global suppliers of unwrought nickel in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were the Netherlands (+107.3% per year) and India (+169.7% per year). With this rapid ascent, both these countries were able to significantly strengthen their positions in the global export structure.
In 2014, the Russian Federation's top 5 trading partners were China, Singapore, Germany, the Netherlands and the U.S. with a combined 85.8% share of the Russian Federation's exports. The share of China soared (+23.4 percentage points), while the share of the U.S. illustrated mildly negative dynamics (-3 percentage points).
