The Classification and Numbering of IADC Tricone Bits

The IADC tricone drill bit classification and numbering system is essential for identifying and understanding the features of various types of drill bits used in oil, gas, and water well drilling. The system works as follows:

IADC specifies that each type of three tricone bit is classified and numbered using a four-digit code, which reflects the bit's design and its application in different formations. The meanings of each digit are as follows:

First Digit: Series Code

This digit, represented by the numbers 1-8, indicates the tooth characteristics and the formation to which the bit is suited. There are two main types of teeth used in oil well drill bits: milled teeth and insert teeth (often referred to as TCI drill bits or Tungsten Carbide Insert (TCI) tricone bits).

  1. Milled teeth: Suitable for soft formations with low compressive strength and high drillability. This is typical for milled tooth tricone bits.
  2. Milled teeth: Suitable for medium to medium-hard formations with high compressive strength.
  3. Milled teeth: Suited for hard formations with medium to high abrasiveness.
  4. Insert teeth: Suited for soft formations with low compressive strength and high drillability.
  5. Insert teeth: Ideal for soft to medium-hard formations with low compressive strength.
  6. Insert teeth: Designed for medium-hard formations with high compressive strength, often used in TCI tricone bits.
  7. Insert teeth: Perfect for hard formations with medium abrasiveness or abrasive characteristics.
  8. Insert teeth: Suited for extremely hard formations with high abrasiveness, often used in tungsten carbide tricone drill bits.

Second Digit: Lithology Grade Code

Represented by numbers 1-4, this digit further subdivides the formations in the first digit's classification from soft to hard, reflecting the specific drilling requirements of the tricone rock bit.

Third Digit: Bit Structure Feature Code

This digit, represented by the numbers 1-9, indicates the bit's bearing and gauge protection features. Numbers 1-7 are used to describe the most common bearing and protection systems in drill bits for oil, gas, and water wells, while 8 and 9 are reserved for future innovations.

  1. Non-sealed roller bearings
  2. Air-cooled roller bearings
  3. Roller bearings with gauge protection
  4. Sealed roller bearings
  5. Sealed roller bearings with gauge protection
  6. Sealed sliding bearings
  7. Sealed sliding bearings with gauge protection

Fourth Digit: Additional Structural Feature Code

This letter code is used to represent additional features that cannot be expressed by the first three digits. IADC has defined 16 features, such as air cooling, motor applications, and special insert shapes, that may be crucial for certain three cone drill bits. Examples of additional features include:

- A: Air cooling

- B: Special sealed bearings

- C: Center nozzles

- D: Directional drilling

- E: Extended nozzles

- G: Additional gauge protection and bit body protection

- H: Horizontal and directional applications

- J: Nozzle offset

- L: Back-up stabilizers

- M: Motor application

- S: Standard milled teeth

- T: Twin cone

- W: Reinforced cutting structure

- X: Wedge-shaped inserts

- Y: Conical inserts

- Z: Other shapes of inserts

In cases where a tricone rotary drill bit has multiple additional structural features, the most prominent feature is selected to be represented by the letter code. These codes help identify the right drill bit for oil and gas exploration and ensure that the tricone bit is best suited for the specific drilling conditions and formations encountered.

Understanding this IADC classification system is vital when choosing between Insert Tooth Drill Bits (TCI bits) and Milled Tooth Tricone Bits for different well drilling projects, whether it's for oil wells, gas fields, or water well drilling operations.
