Rolling Hills Recovery Center Launches Equine Therapy Program in Partnership with Hope’s Promise

Chester, New Jersey - October 15, 2024 - Rolling Hills Recovery Center (RHRC), a leading addiction treatment center in New Jersey, is proud to announce the launch of its new Equine Therapy program in collaboration with Hope’s Promise, a non-profit organization located in Chester, New Jersey.

This partnership will bring a highly effective, innovative therapeutic approach to those seeking recovery, with sessions guided by certified equine therapists at Hope’s Promise. This exciting program aims to help clients heal emotionally, build trust, and overcome mental health challenges in a supportive, natural environment.

Animal-assisted therapy, especially equine therapy, is becoming an integral part of treating mental health issues. It’s fascinating how this approach taps into the bond between humans and animals to help with challenges like trauma, depression, stress, and substance abuse.

Briana Bailey, Primary Therapist at RHRC, beams with joy as she shares a special moment with a magnificent horse at Hope’s Promise Farm,

Horses are used as therapeutic tools in equine-assisted therapies. During therapy sessions, people participate in tasks including feeding, guiding, and grooming horses, but under the supervision of a mental health expert. This type of therapy aims to assist clients with acquiring skills, including self-confidence, emotional control, and accountability.

Maureen Coultas, founder and director of Hope’s Promise, expressed her excitement about the partnership: "We’re thrilled to partner with Rolling Hills Recovery Center to support their efforts to provide equine therapy. Horses have a unique gift for bonding with people, often leading to profound emotional breakthroughs that can truly change lives."

Founded in 2012 by Maureen Coultas, Hope’s Promise has grown into a premier therapeutic riding center. Coultas, the founder and director, has developed a herd of six horses, including Chief Justice, and four miniature horses, all of which play a central role in the organization’s equine-assisted activities. Over the years, Hope’s Promise has flourished, thanks to dozens of dedicated volunteers and a wide range of equine programs that are offered both on the farm and off-site.

"This partnership with Hope’s Promise brings a unique and powerful dimension to our holistic approach to treatment at Rolling Hills," said Laura Riley, LCADC, CCS, Clinical Director at Rolling Hills Recovery Center. "We are convinced that this therapeutic experience will offer our clients the best opportunity to become acquainted with their essential selves in a way that other therapies cannot."

With their gentle nature, many people find that horses quickly form connections with us, creating a special kind of rapport that feels judgment-free. Clients often describe the experience as transformative, feeling safe enough to open up and share their emotions. In this nurturing environment, they can truly explore who they are and begin to heal in ways they might not have thought possible. Witnessing the powerful change that can happen through these relationships is incredible.

Rolling Hills Recovery Center will be taking clients to Hope’s Promise in Chester, NJ, where they will engage in equine-assisted therapy. The partnership is designed to support individuals recovering from addiction and mental health disorders by harnessing the power of human-animal interaction. Equine therapy has been proven to help individuals work through emotional and psychological issues, build self-esteem, and develop emotional resilience.

"Working with horses offers our clients a mirror to reflect on their behaviors and emotions," said Mike Levy, Executive Director at Rolling Hills Recovery Center. "The connection formed between clients and horses helps them gain insights into their feelings and fosters trust, empathy, and emotional regulation."

While our Equine Therapy program at Rolling Hills Recovery Center is designed to help clients achieve personal and emotional growth through the unique bond with horses, it’s important to note that this approach complements, rather than replaces, our other treatment programs. The program is crafted to complement traditional treatment modalities, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), group counseling, and mindfulness practices, with a hands-on approach that is both engaging and effective.
