This one-on-one interview shares Jay Michael Night’s background and experience in writing The Source of Death, Book One of the OtherSide Series.
Tell us about The Source of Death.
The Source of Death is the gripping first installment of the OtherSide series.
Set in New York during the 2000s, the story follows Mikey Black, a kid orphaned when monsters attacked his family at a rest stop. That night, something awoke inside of Mikey, something hungry.
Ever since that night, Mikey was cursed with an eerie aura that brought sickness and death to those around him. Tossed from one fleeting foster home to another, Mikey resigned himself to a lonely existence until a kind-hearted mailman named Arthur offered to adopt him.With hope for a real home, Mikey discovers that his new foster father holds a secret as extraordinary and dangerous as Mikey's own nature. What inspired you to write The Source of Death?
As a teenager, I had a story brewing inside me about an energy vampire who sucked the life out of people around him.
In 2021, I finally decided to put pen to paper and start writing it.
I love fantasy of all kinds and wanted to create my own escape for once. Through my writing, I hope to take readers on an epic journey through the pages of my books.
How did your background and experience influence your writing?
As a child, I was an avid reader. From kindergarten to age twelve, I read hundreds, if not thousands, of fantasy and science fiction books.
Reading became my favorite escape.
Now, in adulthood, my life experiences and career have contributed to my writing. As an Army Combat Veteran, I add a touch of real-world heroism to every book I write. A self-proclaimed fantasy nerd, I have continued to enjoy reading, writing and playing PC games like Overwatch as well.
My true passion lies in writing, and one day, I hope to be able to focus full-time on bringing my characters and worlds to life.
What is one message you would like readers to remember?
No matter how strong and powerful you are, everyone needs help.
Stick by your true friends and family because, with them, you might just be able to save the world!
