Jane Tesh Breaks Barriers with Atypical Romance in Mystery Novel, Ghost Light

Jane Tesh Breaks Barriers with Atypical Romance in Mystery Novel, Ghost Light
Jane Tesh's Ghost Light is a genre-bending novel that combines the superstitions and quirks of community theatre with a sensational murder mystery.

Set in North Carolina, Ghost Light is a groundbreaking mystery that follows Theodosia "Teddy" Ballard as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery, and sets out to right the injustices of the community theater she has been inducted into. When the stage manager for the Little Shop of Horrors meets an untimely death, Teddy agrees to fill in to help out her actor friend, Will. Everything changes when she meets George Clancy Everhart, the theater ghost, who informs her that the previous stage manager was murdered and demands that she find the killer. Both investigation and rehearsals are complicated when Teddy makes a surprising discovery about her relationship with Will, and learns that George has his own dramatic agenda.

While writing Ghost Light, I realized along with my main character that neither of us wanted her relationship with her friend to be a typical romance. This led to an exploration of asexuality for me and for my character, which was both challenging and rewarding,” says author Jane Tesh. An award-winning author, Tesh specializes in writing light-hearted adventures filled with humor and romance. A story that both entertains and enlightens, Tesh’s goal with Ghost Light was to use the backdrop of a murder mystery to offer readers insight into a lesser-known sexual orientation. “I hope that Ghost Light will dispel the myths about asexuality and lead to a greater understanding about this sexual orientation.”

While Ghost Light offers an exciting take on the mystery genre, it’s no standard whodunit. The book weaves together several standout features that put it in a class of its own. Tesh’s writing is well-paced and immediate, with many scenes that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. The protagonist, Teddy, is a carefully crafted heroine that readers will understand and learn from. In addition, themes of fantasy, mystery, the occult and female empowerment tie the work together in a memorable way, introducing readers to a world where everyone is accepted for their authentic selves.

Ghost Light has received positive reviews from well-renowned literary organizations, authors, and reviewers around the world. Amazon reviewer, K. Reed writes, “Ghost Light didn’t disappoint! It was a fun read with excellent characters! I highly recommend it!” In addition, Amazon reviewer Amber writes, “This book briefly touches on asexuality and I enjoyed that…one thing I really love about cozies like this is the exposure to new types of people or niche ways of living that gives me an opportunity to learn more.”

Ghost Light is the only one of its kind. Perhaps it is Tesh’s best novel, and at the very least, her most inventive.
