Organizers of the Annual Caribbean American Heritage (CARAH) Awards, Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS), is set to make a live in-person return of the event at the 29th edition, with the upcoming annual gala scheduled to be held on Friday, November 18, 2022. The awards organized to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of Caribbean American leaders in various fields while celebrating Caribbean pride and the great promise of Caribbean immigrants to America and worldwide has announced the names of awardees.
“ICS started this event in an effort to highlight to the American society at-large the caliber of individuals that claimed Caribbean American ancestry, and to provide a forum for honoring and recognizing their contributions to America and the world,” said Dr. Claire A. Nelson, Founder and President of the Institute of Caribbean Studies. “This remains important today when we consider that there is now a woman of Jamaican heritage serving as Vice-President of the United States of America.”
The 29th Annual Caribbean American Heritage (CARAH) Awards, hosted by CBS television reporter Ava-Joye Burnett with entertainment by Image Band, will take place at the JW Marriott in Washington DC, returning its in-person format after the previous two editions were held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Recipients are selected from all walks of life, recognizing their contributions to American/Caribbean culture through literature, Entrepreneurship, public service, and others.
The Honorees for the 29th Annual Caribbean American Heritage Awards include Professor Carole Boyce Davies from Trinidad and Tobago, the editor of the three-volume Encyclopedia of the African Diaspora: Origins, Experiences, and Culture, with the Outstanding Scholarship in African Diaspora Studies; Ainsley Gill also from Trinidad and Tobago with the Trailblazer Award, recognizing his achievements as the CEO of Niquan Energy, an energy industry veteran and seasoned entrepreneur with more than 20 years’ experience in international government relations, financing, business development, information technology and management consulting.
Other awardees are Bihari Lall, Guyanese-American, a Franchise Owner of Denny’s Brooklyn and Jackson Heights, Managing Partner of Gitto's Farmers Market, and President of Blue Water at Brooklyn terminal market, winning the Outstanding Entrepreneurship award; Eric Adolphe, of Haitian heritage winning the Excellence in Science and Technology award for his efforts as the founder of Forward Edge, a San Antonio-based startup applying artificial intelligence to solving problems of social consequence and co-founder of GovFlex, a platform that connects government contractors and agencies with independent experts to facilitate more collaboration across the ecosystem. The 29th Annual Caribbean American Heritage (CARAH) Awards will also honor Forerunner Award, Dwight Thanos Smith , Chief Visionary Officer and Lead Inventor at Paragon VTOL Aerospace, a pioneer in the vertical take-off and landing aerospace industry, creating technological breakthroughs and decarbonizing transport, who hails from Jamaica; Luminary Award for Outstanding Contributions to Health Care, Philanthropist Dr. Trisha Bailey, Jamaican CEO of Bailey Medical Supplies and Bailey Pharmacy, a company that is transforming the patient care ecosystem in the state of Florida and real estate investor; Outstanding Community Service, Guyana-born Stacey Mollison, President/CEO, Libra Management Group a strategic sourcing and management consulting firm with offices in Downtown Decatur in the Metro Atlanta area, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Guyana, South America; and Vanguard, Josanne Francis, who hails from Trinidad and Tobago and is an internationally known steelpan performer and music educator.
