Miami, FL - Medellin, Colombia has become the epicenter of tourism and cultural movements in Latin America. A majority of Colombian artists such JBalvin and KarolG hail from the eterna primavera city giving it global status.
In the wake of such reemerged attention to the once home of the infamous Medellin Cartel, renowned architect David Duque is promoting the structures and venues that facilitate such cultural renaissance of this beautiful city which he also led in their construction.
Duque, recognized across Colombia as the man who has modernized major cities, designed and oversaw Medellin’s Metro Plus an innovative system of transportation that has become a model in Latin America.
“We recognized early on that offering a robust transportation system that could overcome geological and population growth challenges would be key to making Medellin attractive to live in and visit,” said Duque.
Duque’s success with Metro Plus facilitated the stage for sharp spike in tourism and safety. As a result, Medellin became known as the most attractive city of Colombia.
Duque’s fingerprints can also be found in the Parques del Río, Medellin’s central park. Filled with attractive landscape, store fronts and functional sidewalks with the ability to access all four points of Medellin. In a visionary move, Duque included a venue for artistic presentations and artists galleries. The park promoted sustainability by incorporating solar and hydraulic electric banks that power the park and all its attractions.
“Medellin had this open space, which was always used as a park, but it was not a park with a purpose. We decided to give it new life, new purpose and today it is one of my proudest projects,” shared Duque.
The City of Eternal Spring is in a reemergence as a global destination with close to a million foreign visitors per year. It still has the challenge that it is the world’s third most densely populated city with 2.6 million people. To combat those challenges Duque is looking to Asia and the United States for solutions.
“America has been able to use architecture, technology and even tax policy to manage population growth and urban development and I seek incorporate those solutions to Medellin and the America’s in general,” Duque recently said while on tour in Los Angeles and MiamI.
