Former United States Secretary of State, William Jennings Bryan once said that destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. William's statement is currently being perfectly reflected in the life of 16 year old swimming prodigy Mike Lowery.
The incredibly-gifted athlete from Seattle, Washington, didn't wait for destiny. He reached out to grab it with both hands, and so he did at a very tender age. It would seem Mike had an innate proclivity for swimming for he took to the waters when he was just a kid. ''For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a professional swimmer. It has always been my lifelong ambition and I'm grateful that my parents set me on this path'', the young prodigy said.
An anonymous sage said that children are great imitators, so give them something great to imitate. As a brilliant kid, Mike was enchanted by his idol, Caeleb Remel Dressel, a seven-time Olympic gold medalist who holds world records in the 100 -meter butterfly (long course and short course), 50-meter freestyle (short course), and 100 -meter individual medley (short course).
Mike set out his swimming career not just to imitate, by also to surpass his idol. In 2018, Mike Lowery finally had the chance to meet his Idol at the Pan Pacific Championships, held in Tokyo, Japan, and since his desire and grit has been increased tenfold as he aims to become a professional swimmer and win an Olympic gold medal just like Caeleb in the near future.
At the moment, Mike Lowery is not doing bad for himself. In fact, he's flourishing in this path that destiny has set for him. Mike Lowery's precocious talent has seen him win second place at Pacific Northwest Open Water Swims, Third place at Washington State Open Water Swims, and Third place at Ocean Dive Contest.
It's pertinent to note that there's more to Mike Lowery than swimming. His uncommon ability extends to the world of science. The whiz kid has an interest in biomechanical engineering. He participated in Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair with a project involving a prototype of a mechanical leg. His prototype was very appreciated by the scientific jury, who congratulated Mike for his bold initiative and outstanding engineering skills, especially at his young age.
He may already be a serial winner at such a young age, but, Mike Lowery is not resting on his laurels just yet. Mike believes that a human being is not attaining his full heights until he is educated and that Education is not preparation for life, but that education is life itself. Hence, with a perfect GPA and incredible accomplishments for his age, Mike dreams of getting accepted into Stanford University to further study Biomechanical Engineering, while also being involved in competitive swimming.
He may be at the dawn of his career, but it is evident that Mike Lowery is a generational talent who is set to take the world of competitive swimming by storm. Olympics, beware!
