Top female scientists grace Intl Women's Day event in Hangzhou

Three female scientists shared their stories at an event commemorating International Women's Day at West Lake University on March 8.

Yang Dan, the first female chair of chemical biology at West Lake University, said she aims to use organic chemistry and chemical biology tools to unravel the mysteries of life and explore novel approaches for the treatment of human diseases.

"First focus on a major issue and then target a direction that no one has tried," Yang said. "Follow your interests, do what you are good at, focus on research, and you will find a different world."

Han Xiqiu, a professor of deep sea mineral resources and their associated geological systems, encouraged female researchers to be brave in choosing what they want to do and to be dedicated to their careers.

"I hope everyone can be blessed by fate, and at the same time, be patient and combine hardness with softness," Han said.

Han is the first woman to be appointed chief scientist of the Dayang Yihao (Ocean No 1), China's main ocean research vessel. She is also the first female chief scientist in China's maritime exploration field.

Yang Luhan, 36, a gene-editing engineer and the chief executive of Qihan Biotech in Hangzhou, said: "Women have an open view of the world. My generation can make a difference with their abilities and efforts."

Yang's company was responsible for the world's first successful transplantation of a pig heart into a 57-year-old patient two months ago. She said that she is aiming to foster innovative biomedical research in China.
